The India e-Tourist Visa needs two uploads: a passport bio page scan and a photograph. The India e-Business Visa needs those too and then more, depending on why you're visiting. A business card is mandatory for every applicant. Supporting clearances are mandatory for several sub-types. And unlike the tourist visa, getting the document list wrong here doesn't just delay your application, it can invalidate it entirely before it reaches a reviewer.
IVC's guide covers every document required for every India e-Business Visa sub-type, drawn directly from the official Indian Visa Online portal. Whether you're travelling for a trade visit, a conference, a film production, or a sports event, here's exactly what to prepare.

India e-Business Visa Validity and Eligibility
The India e-Business Visa (e-B1V) is valid for one year from ETA grant, multiple entries, with each continuous stay not exceeding 180 days. It is available to all eligible nationalities including UK nationals, Mexican citizens and UAE passport holders for purposes covering:
Business meetings, trade visits, industrial tours, commercial activity, academic lectures under GIAN, sports-related visits, conference attendance, and film production.
Each of these purposes falls under the India e-Business Visa umbrella but each carries its own document requirements. Start with the standard checklist, then identify the sub-type that applies to your visit.
Documents Required for All e-Business Visa Applications
These three are mandatory regardless of sub-type. Have them ready before opening the application form.
1. Scanned Passport Bio Page
The page showing your photograph, full name, date of birth, nationality, passport number, and expiry date — including the MRZ (Machine Readable Zone) strip at the bottom.

The portal's automated check verifies format and file size only. Manual review checks legibility. A scan that is technically compliant but dark, blurry, or partially cropped will pass the upload stage but fail the human review — one of the most common causes of silent rejection that applicants don't discover until their application stalls with no clear explanation.
Validity check: The passport itself must be valid for at least 6 months from the intended date of arrival in India, with at least 2 blank pages remaining for immigration stamps.
2. Passport Photograph
This is the single most common technical rejection trigger across all India e-Visa categories, including the India e-Business Visa. The portal accepts uploads that fail review — it does not warn you at the time.

Why this matters specifically for business applicants: A rejected e-Business Visa application means losing the entire non-refundable fee and potentially missing a scheduled meeting, trade event, or conference that cannot be rescheduled around a reapplication.
3. Business Card
This is the document requirement that most confuses first-time India e-Business Visa applicants.
The official India Visa portal defines a business card in two ways and either is acceptable:
- Option A: A business card issued by your employer: The physical card, scanned clearly showing your name, company name, job title, and contact details.
- Option B: If you do not have a business card, you can use your Indian company’s invitation letter or India Business Visa application letter addressed to the Indian Mission, drafted on your current employer’s company letterhead.
The business card or invitation letter must be uploaded as a PDF (10 KB–300 KB). It must be in English. Documents in any other language are liable for rejection regardless of content.
4. Invitation Letter from the Indian Organization
"Any letter of invitation if applicable from Indian parties with which you conduct the business."
If your Indian counterpart can provide a formal letter on company letterhead confirming the purpose and duration of your visit, upload it. It must be in English and PDF format.
Beyond the Basics: Specialist Sub-Types and Their Additional Requirements
Four situations under the India e-Business Visa require significant additional documentation. If any of these apply to your visit, the standard three documents alone are not sufficient.
Conference Attendance (e-B5V)
For attending conferences, seminars, or workshops organized by a Ministry, Department, State Government, UT Administration, PSU, or private organization in India.
Validity: 30 days from arrival, single entry.
Required documents:
✔️ Scanned passport bio page
✔️ Invitation from the organizer (mandatory)
✔️ Political clearance from the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India
✔️ Event clearance from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India
Film Production (e-B6V)
For foreign nationals undertaking film, television, documentary, or digital production in India.
Validity: One year from ETA grant, multiple entries.
Required documents:
✔️ Scanned passport bio page
✔️ Clearance letter from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting
✔️ Letter of intent regarding the shoot in India, covering: production schedule, particulars of the cast and crew travelling to India, chosen filming locations, list of filming equipment being brought into the country, and any other relevant production details
Sports-Related Activity
For foreign sports persons, teams, or officials travelling to India for sporting events or related activities.
Required documents:
✔️ Scanned passport bio page
✔️ Approval of the Government of India from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (Department of Sports)
✔️ Invitation letter to the foreign sports team or sports persons from the concerned Sports Federation or Association in India
✔️ If the applicant participated in any commercial sports event during a previous visit to India — documents confirming tax compliance for that visit
✔️ If the event involves Restricted or Protected Areas in India — three additional clearances are required:
- Clearance from the Ministry of Home Affairs
- Political clearance from the Ministry of External Affairs
- Requisite clearance from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports
Academic Lectures Under GIAN (Global Initiative for Academic Networks)
For foreign faculty delivering lectures at Indian institutions under the GIAN program.
Required documents:
✔️ Scanned passport bio page
✔️ Invitation from the host institute to the foreign faculty
✔️ Copy of the sanction order under GIAN, issued by the National Coordinating Institute — IIT Kharagpur
✔️ Copy of the synopsis of the courses to be delivered by the faculty

How Much Does the India e-Business Visa Cost?
The India e-Business Visa fee varies by nationality.
- Most eligible nationalities: $120 (plus bank transaction charge)
- A bank transaction charge of 3% for card payments and 4% for PayPal applies on top, per the official government portal
These are government fees, non-refundable once submitted — regardless of whether the application is approved or rejected. This is precisely why getting documents right before payment matters more for the India e-Business Visa than for most other India e-Visa categories, where the stakes of reapplying are lower.
Confirm your nationality's current rate with IVC before applying.
Processing Time and Application Timeline
The India e-Business Visa follows the same official processing window as other India e-Visa categories: a minimum of 72 hours, with real-world timelines averaging 8–10 business days in practice. During peak seasons (October through March) processing can run longer.
Critical timing rules:
- Applications can be submitted a maximum of 120 days before your intended arrival date
- The minimum advance application window is 4 days before arrival — but this is a technical floor, not a realistic plan
- The visa fee must be paid before the application can be submitted; payment failure stalls the process entirely
- For conference attendance specifically (e-B5V), clearances from the Ministry of External Affairs and Ministry of Home Affairs must typically be obtained by the conference organizer before you apply — these clearances take their own time and cannot be rushed
The practical recommendation: Apply at least 3–4 weeks before travel for standard e-Business Visa sub-types. For conference, sports, or film sub-types that require government ministry clearances, begin the process 6–8 weeks ahead to allow the organizing body time to secure the required clearances before your application is submitted.
Why India e-Business Visa Applications Get Rejected — and How to Avoid It
The India e-Business Visa has a higher document complexity than the e-Tourist Visa, which means more opportunities for rejection, and more ways for a preventable error to cost the full non-refundable fee. These are the most common causes specific to business applicants:
❌ Business card not in English
The most frequently overlooked requirement. The official portal states explicitly: all documents including business cards and invitation letters must be in English. A card in French, German, Arabic, Spanish, Japanese, or any other language will cause rejection. The portal accepts the upload, it does not flag the language. A reviewer will.
❌ Wrong sub-type selected
Selecting "Trade Visit" when the actual purpose is conference attendance, film production, or a sports event results in a category mismatch. Each sub-type has its own document requirements; submitting the wrong documents for the wrong sub-type doesn't trigger a warning — it triggers a rejection.
❌ Missing ministry clearances for conference, sports, or film sub-types
These clearances are the responsibility of the in India, not the applicant — but the applicant's application cannot succeed without them. If your host in India hasn't secured the relevant Ministry of External Affairs or Ministry of Home Affairs clearance before you apply, your application cannot be approved regardless of how clean the rest of your documents are.
❌ Non-compliant photograph
Glasses, off-white backgrounds, shadows, or an oversized file with the wrong name format — any one of these passes the portal's upload check and fails the manual review. For a non-refundable fee application, this is an avoidable loss.
❌ Invitation letter from Indian organization not in PDF format or not in English
The portal accepts Word documents and other formats at the upload stage — reviewers don't. PDFs only, in English, on official company letterhead.
❌ Applying too close to the travel date
The 4-day minimum is a technical rule. With real-world processing averaging 8–10 business days, applying 5 days before a critical business meeting is a practical failure regardless of how clean the application is.
Immigration with Indian e-business Visa - What to Carry to India?
The document checklist above covers the application. These are separat; required at check-in and immigration:
✔️ Printed ETA that states, status confirmed 'GRANTED' before you fly.
✔️ The same passport used to apply for India e-Visa.
✔️ Return or onward journey ticket.
✔️ Proof of business purpose: invitation letter from Indian organization, hotel booking, meeting confirmation, or event registration as applicable
✔️ Proof of sufficient funds for the duration of your stay
✔️ e-Arrival Card, completed within 72 hours before arrival via the official portal or the Indian Visa Su-Swagatam app

One Rule That Applies to Every India e-Business Visa
Every document uploaded — business card, invitation letter, conference clearance, letter of intent, must be in English. The official portal states this explicitly:
"All documents including Business cards, Invitation letters etc. must be in English language, failing which the application would be liable for rejection."
If a document is issued in another language, have it professionally translated and upload the English version. Do not rely on the portal to flag a non-English document — it won't. A reviewer will.
Why need expert guidance from IVC Visas?
The India e-Business Visa fee is non-refundable once submitted. A document error discovered after payment means starting over, with a second full fee, a missed meeting, and potentially a rescheduled flight.
At IVC Visas, every India e-Business Visa application is reviewed before it reaches the portal:
- Photo compliance check: dimensions, background, file name, and format verified before upload
- Document language check, making sure every uploaded document confirmed in English before submission
- Sub-type verification so that your stated travel purpose matched against the correct sub-type and its specific document list
- Ministry clearance guidance for conference, film, and sports sub-types, we flag the clearance requirements to you and your Indian host organisation early, so the timeline doesn't collapse at the last step
- Format check: every document confirmed as PDF before upload, not after rejection
The India e-Business Visa process is manageable when you know exactly what each sub-type needs. The cost of getting it wrong is the full fee, the trip, and the missed opportunity.
