India Travel Seasons Explained; And When to Apply for Your India e-Visa

Choosing when to visit India is one of the most consequential decisions in planning the trip. Not because any season is bad; India has something extraordinary to offer in every month, but because India is a large, climatically diverse country where what is ideal in one region can be miserable in another at the exact same time of year.
The season you choose to travel in directly affects when you need to apply for your India e-Visa.
October to February is India's peak travel window which is also when application volumes are the highest and processing timelines is the longest. A traveler who books flights for November and applies for their India e-Visa in October without allowing adequate time is not being careful. They are taking a risk with a non-refundable fee and a fixed flight date.
Discover India's three travel seasons, the regional breakdown of when to visit where, the festival calendar foreign travelers most want to experience, and the India visa application timing that each one demands.
Nationals of UK, Singapore, Vietnam and other eligible nations can apply for their India e-visa with IVC if they demand an approved ETA in hand right before they travel to India.
First - A Geography Note That Changes Travel Plans
India does not have a single climate. It is a subcontinent with at least four distinct climatic zones operating simultaneously.
When it is winter in Rajasthan and perfect for travel, it is peak summer in South India's tropical belt. When the monsoon is flooding the streets of Mumbai, it is simultaneously the best time to trek in Ladakh, which sits in a rain shadow and becomes accessible only once snow clears. When Goa's beaches are at their most crowded and expensive in December, the Andaman Islands are entering their finest season.
Two travelers asking "when is the best time to visit India?" may have completely different correct answers depending on where in India they intend to go. Keep that in mind as you plan and when you apply.
The Three India Travel Seasons
➤ Peak Season- October to March
This is India's golden window and the period when the vast majority of foreign tourists visit.
North India is at its best: cool, dry, and accessible. Rajasthan's fort cities, the Golden Triangle (Delhi, Agra, Jaipur), the Himalayan foothills of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, and Goa's coast are all excellent. South India (Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka) is also very good during this period, though the eastern coast sees its own short monsoon in October and November.
India e-Visa application timing: This is the busiest period for India e-Visa applications worldwide. Real-world processing currently averages 8–10 business days but during peak season, higher application volumes mean this timeline can extend. Apply at least 3–4 weeks before travel if your departure falls between October and February. Travelers planning Diwali or Christmas travel in particular should apply no later than early October or late November respectively. Do not apply a week before a fixed flight booking during this window.
If your departure is imminent and you are travelling in peak season, choose IVC Visas' express service; your application is prioritized on our side to reduce preparation and submission time. The government's processing timeline is the same for all applicants, but every day saved on the submission side matters when you are working against a peak-season window.
After submission, make sure to check that your Indian e-visa status. Learn that through IVC!
➤ Shoulder Season- April and September
These transitional months sit either side of India's extremes. April sees the end of the comfortable cool season in the north; temperatures begin climbing but many popular sites remain accessible before the heat sets in. It is an excellent time to visit Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu before the monsoon arrives. September marks the end of the monsoon across most of India, the landscape is green, the crowds have not yet arrived, and prices are lower.
India e-Visa application timing: Application volumes are lower during shoulder season, and real-world processing tends to be closer to the 72-hour official window. Allow 2 weeks before travel as a comfortable buffer. Shoulder season is the most forgiving time to apply, but never rely on 72-hour turnaround for fixed travel plans regardless of when you go.
➤ Off-Season- June to August (Monsoon)
The monsoon arrives in Kerala in early June and sweeps north and east over the following weeks. Most of North India including Rajasthan, Delhi, Agra, becomes intensely hot and then wet. Outdoor sightseeing is genuinely uncomfortable. This is the period most foreign visitors avoid for North India.
But the off-season has its own travel logic. Ladakh and Spiti Valley in the high Himalaya open up in June and July but snowbound in winter, they become accessible precisely when the rest of India is soaking. The Northeast, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Assam, is rich and lush through the monsoon and sees very few foreign visitors. Kerala's Ayurveda retreats actually market the monsoon months as their prime season, as the humidity enhances therapeutic treatments.
India e-Visa application timing: Off-season is the quietest period for India e-Visa applications. Processing tends to be faster and closer to the official window. If your itinerary is fixed around Ladakh or Northeast India in July, apply 2 weeks before departure and use standard service.
India's Festival Calendar; And When to Start Your Visa Application
These are the moments most foreign travelers specifically want to experience — and each one has a visa application window attached to it:
Holi (Usually in March)
India's festival of colors takes place in late February or March depending on the lunar calendar. For a festival that falls on a single day, travelers plan their entire India trip around it. Apply for your India e-Visa 3–4 weeks before your intended arrival to allow adequate processing time and preparation.
Diwali (October or November)
The festival of lights draws foreign visitors to Jaipur, Varanasi, and Udaipur for illuminated forts, floating lamps, and fireworks. Diwali falls in October or November. Apply no later than early October for a Diwali-timed trip, this is one of the highest-demand windows of the year.
Pushkar Camel Fair (November)
The desert trading fair in Rajasthan's Pushkar attracts travelers from across the world for its scale and spectacle. It falls in late October or early November. Apply 4–5 weeks before arrival — Rajasthan is fully in peak season at this point.
Republic Day (January 26)
The military parade and cultural display in New Delhi is a significant travel moment for foreign visitors interested in India's national life. Apply in early January for late January travel.
Eid and Islamic festivals
India has a large Muslim population and Eid celebrations, particularly in Hyderabad, Delhi, and Lucknow, are vivid and culturally significant. Eid dates shift each year based on the lunar calendar. Apply once the date is confirmed with at least 4 weeks of lead time.
Christmas in Goa (December)
Goa's Portuguese Catholic heritage makes Christmas one of its most atmospheric festivals. December is also Goa's peak tourist month. Apply by mid-November for a December Goa visit.
Where in India, Best Season by Region
North India (Delhi, Agra, Rajasthan, Varanasi)
October to March. This is the canonical India experience and the most visited circuit by foreign travelers. Avoid April–June (extreme heat) and July–September (monsoon with humidity and rainfall in most areas).
South India (Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh)
October to March for the west coast and interior. November to January for the eastern coast (Chennai, Pondicherry) after its brief northeast monsoon passes. Kerala's Ayurveda season peaks June to August, off-season for tourism but specifically marketed for wellness stays.
The Himalayan North (Ladakh, Spiti, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand)
June to September for high-altitude Ladakh and Spiti, the only window when passes are open. October to March for hill stations like Manali, Shimla, and Mussoorie, though higher areas may be snow-blocked. Rishikesh and Haridwar are accessible year-round.
Northeast India (Meghalaya, Assam, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh)
October to April for most of the region.
Note: Parts of Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim require Protected Area Permits in addition to the India e-Visa, apply for these separately well in advance. June to September is lush but very wet across most of the Northeast, with Assam and Meghalaya receiving among the highest rainfall on earth.
Goa and the Western Coast
November to February is peak. Crowds and prices are highest in December and January. The beaches are quieter and more affordable in October and March. Avoid June to September as the Arabian Sea monsoon hits the Konkan coast directly.
The Andaman Islands
November to April. The islands are closed or inaccessible during the monsoon. December to February is peak season with calm seas and excellent visibility for diving.
The India Visa Application Timing | A Simple Rule
Regardless of which season or region you choose, one principle applies universally: the India e-Visa fee is non-refundable and real-world processing averages 8–10 business days. Fixed flights and non-refundable accommodation are financial commitments that depend on visa approval. Give the process room.
The recommended minimum: apply 2–3 weeks before departure in any season. Apply 3–4 weeks before departure if travelling in peak season (October–February). If you are within 2 weeks of departure, choose IVC Visas' express service.
The India e-Visa can be applied for up to 120 days in advance for most categories. There is no advantage in applying months ahead beyond peace of mind — the 1-year and 5-year e-Tourist Visa validity starts from the date of ETA grant, not from when you travel. But there is a real disadvantage in applying too close to departure.
Apply early. Confirm 'GRANTED' before you book anything non-refundable. Then focus on the trip.
At IVC Visas, our team reviews your application, documents, and photograph before submission, on standard and express(rush) service. Check current pricing, confirm your eligibility, and start your application as soon as your travel dates are confirmed.
