Most travelers on an India e-Visa never need to think about FRRO. They arrive, they travel, they leave — the visa does its job, and that's the end of it. But occasionally, circumstances change. A medical emergency. A family crisis. A flight cancellation that spirals into something longer. And suddenly, a question that feels urgent:
can I extend my India e-Visa?

The honest answer is NO, and also, in specific circumstances, there is one official route forward. Understanding the difference between those two answers is what this guide is about.
If you are travelling with a passport of Spain, Taiwan, Italy or any of the other 175 eligible nationalities, IVC explains whether extension of the India e-visa is possible or not.
Is the India e-Visa Actually Extendable?
This needs a direct answer: the India e-Visa is officially non-extendable and non-convertible.
The Government of India does not offer a routine extension service for e-Visa holders the way some other countries do. There is no standard process to simply apply for "more time" on a tourist or business e-Visa as a matter of course.
What does exist is an exceptional, discretionary route through e-FRRO — available to foreign nationals who are genuinely unable to depart India within their visa's validity due to justifiable reasons. Foreign nationals who are unable to leave or exit India within the validity of their visa due to justifiable reasons should apply for the appropriate visa service at indianfrro.gov.in. Such visa services are available only to foreign nationals who are present in India, and the application must be made within the validity of their current visa, allowing a reasonable time for processing.
A genuine medical emergency, a serious family situation, or circumstances genuinely beyond your control are the kinds of reasons this route exists for. It is not a mechanism to extend a holiday, revisit India without reapplying, or avoid the standard application process. Applications submitted without genuine grounds are unlikely to be approved and attempting to overstay while one is pending does not legalize the stay.
What Is FRRO and What Is e-FRRO?
FRRO stands for Foreigners Regional Registration Office. These are offices operated by India's Bureau of Immigration under the Ministry of Home Affairs, specifically responsible for immigration services for foreign nationals already staying in India. FRRO offices are located in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, and Cochin.
E-FRRO is the electronic version of this system — an online portal that allows foreign nationals to apply for immigration services without visiting a physical office. India visa extension applications, visa conversions, exit permits, and registration services are all handled through this portal.

For most applicants, e-FRRO means the entire process is managed online. No queuing at an office. No in-person submission. Your application, documents, and payment all go through the portal — and the response comes by email. A physical FRRO office visit is only required if the FRRO specifically requests it.

When Does the e-FRRO Route Apply?
If you find yourself in India and genuinely cannot depart before your India visa expires, the e-FRRO route is what the official guidance directs you to. Situations that may justify an application include:
- A medical emergency requiring hospitalization or ongoing treatment
- Death or critical illness of a family member requiring your presence
- A natural disaster or civil disruption making departure impossible
- A documented failure of transport with no viable alternative within the visa window
In all cases, supporting documentation will be required. The stronger and more specific your documentation, the better your chances of approval. The FRRO reviews applications on their individual merits — there is no guaranteed outcome.
What Service to Select on the e-FRRO Portal?
Although e-Visas are officially non-extendable, foreign nationals who are unable to depart India may submit a request through e-FRRO. The appropriate service may be Visa Extension, Visa Conversion, or another immigration service, depending on the circumstances and FRRO guidance.
Do not select:
- Visa Conversion: this changes your visa category, not your stay duration (more on this below)
- Exit Permit: This is for those who have already overstayed and need to leave legally
- Registration: this applies to long-stay visa holders under registration requirements, not e-Visa extension
Selecting the wrong service wastes time, requires resubmission, and may create complications with your application record. Select "Visa Extension" and proceed from there.
Visa Conversion: If your circumstances have changed — for example, you arrived on an e-Tourist Visa but now require a longer stay for medical treatment — a Visa Conversion application (changing from tourist to medical category) may be more suitable than a simple extension. This is also handled through e-FRRO under the Visa Conversion service. If you are unsure which applies to your situation, contact the jurisdictional FRRO directly before submitting.
Step-by-Step: How to Apply Through e-FRRO
Step 1 | Create your account
Go to the e-FRRO portal and create a new account. You will need a valid email address and a working Indian mobile number to receive the OTP for verification. Use your own personal email as all communications, decisions, and documents will be sent here.

Step 2 | Log in and select your service
After verifying your account, log in and navigate to Visa Services. Select "Visa Extension" as your service type. Fill in the application form accurately — your passport details, current visa details, and the reason for your extension request must all be entered correctly.
Step 3 | Upload your documents
The following documents are required for a visa extension application. All documents must be uploaded in PDF format, with each file not exceeding 1 MB:
- Copy of your passport (full document)
- Copy of your current Indian visa
- Proof of justifiable reason for extension (medical certificate, hospitalisation record, or other supporting documentation as applicable)
- Proof of financial support during extended stay
- Address proof in India (hotel booking, lease agreement, or host letter)
- Additional documents, including police clearance certificates where required, may be requested by FRRO.
Your passport photograph must also be uploaded separately: JPG format, maximum 1 MB, full face front view, plain light or white background, no shadows, no glasses.
Step 4 | Submit your application
Review every entry before submitting. Once submitted, the FRRO will look over your application and let you know if you need additional information or documents. Do not submit the application and assume approval — monitor your registered email closely for any communication.
Step 5 | Pay the fee
After submission and initial review, you will receive an email or SMS notification to make a payment. Log back into the portal and proceed to the Payment section. Payment is accepted via SBI ePay or Axis Bank gateway using credit card, debit card, internet banking, or UPI. The exact amount of the fee may vary based on nationality and visa type and will be communicated to you directly. Do not attempt payment before receiving the fee notification — pay only the amount specified.
Step 6 | Receive Notification
Processing times vary depending on the case, documentation, and FRRO workload after receiving complete documents, payment, and information. A response will be sent to the email provided in the application. If approved, your extension document (Registration Certificate or relevant authorization) will be sent to your email. If the FRRO requires your physical presence at any stage, you will be notified; otherwise, the entire process remains online.
What Happens If Your Application Is Not Granted in Time?
If the extension or permission to continue stay is not granted within the validity of your current visa, you must depart from India. Failure to depart will be considered a willful illegal overstay and will be treated in accordance with the law.
This is not a technicality. Overstaying an Indian visa — even while an e-FRRO application is pending — carries legal consequences including fines, detention, and restrictions on future Indian visa applications. If your application is still being processed as your visa expiry approaches, contact the jurisdictional FRRO directly through the portal's contact function and flag the urgency. Do not simply wait and hope.
Three Things Not to Do
❌ Do not wait until the last day
The e-FRRO processing window is 7–10 business days. Apply as soon as you know departure within the visa window is not possible — not the day before expiry.
❌ Do not apply for a new India e-Visa instead
The e-Visa application portal (indianvisaonline.gov.in) is for people outside India applying before travel. You cannot apply for a new e-Visa while your current one is active and you are inside India. The e-FRRO portal is the correct and only route for those already in the country.
❌ Do not ignore FRRO notifications
If the FRRO emails asking for additional documents, respond promptly. Delays in responding — or failing to pay the fee when notified — can result in your application being deleted from the system, leaving you without any valid authorisation to remain.
