Planning a trip from Austria to India?
Whether you're exploring Rajasthan's forts, attending business meetings in Mumbai, seeking medical treatment, or visiting friends and family, Austrian passport holders must obtain an appropriate India visa before travelling to India.

For most travelers from Austria, the India e-Visa is the simplest and most convenient option. The electronic visa system allows eligible foreign nationals to apply online without visiting an embassy or consulate, making it particularly suitable for short-term tourism, business, and medical visits.
Do Austrian Citizens Need a Visa for India?
Yes.
Austrian citizens require a valid visa before travelling to India. Austria is among the nationalities eligible for the Indian e-Visa program, provided the purpose of travel falls within an approved category.
Most Austrian travelers choose an India e-Visa because the application process is completed online and does not typically require a visit to the Indian Embassy in Austria.
Exception: Diplomatic and official Austrian passport holders are not eligible for an India e-visa. They must visit Indian embassy in Austria to obtain a regular visa. Also, OCI cardholders don't require an India e-visa.
If you are unsure about eligibility, reviewing the requirements applicable to US citizens, Zimbabwe passport holders, or Cuba nationals can help illustrate how India's e-Visa framework operates across different eligible nationalities.
Which India e-Visa Can Austrian Citizens Apply For?
The Indian e-Visa system currently offers multiple categories, allowing Austrian citizens to choose a visa based on their travel purpose.
The most commonly used categories include:
India e-Tourist Visa
Suitable for:
- Holidays and sightseeing
- Visiting friends and relatives
- Recreational courses
- Short yoga program
- Certain voluntary activities permitted under e-Visa rules
Available in three durations: 30 days (double entry), 1 year (multiple entry), and 5 years (multiple entry). The 1-year and 5-year options allow cumulative stays of up to 180 days per calendar year.
India e-Business Visa
Suitable for:
- Business meetings
- Trade discussions
- Industrial visits
- Commercial activities
- Market exploration
Valid for 1 year with multiple entries, each stay not exceeding 180 days.
India e-Medical Visa
Suitable for Austrian citizens travelling to India for treatment at recognized hospitals and medical institutions.
Valid for 60 days with triple entry. Requires a letter from the treating hospital in India.
Other Available e-Visa Categories
Depending on eligibility and circumstances, Austrian citizens may also encounter:
- e-Medical Attendant Visa
- e-Student Visa
- e-Family Visa
- e-Transit Visa
- e-Miscellaneous Visa
- e-Production Investment Visa
The correct category should always match the actual purpose of travel. If you wish to stay for long term purposes in India, you might need a regular visa. As a citizen of Austria, you need to keep in mind that India doesn't provide visa on arrival facility to Austria. So, India e-visa is the most suitable and convenient option for most of the travelers.

What Does an India e-Visa Cost for Austrian Citizens?
Fees depend on the visa category and duration chosen, not a single flat rate, so it helps to know the actual figures going in.
For the 30-day e-Tourist Visa under regular service, the government fee and service charge together typically come to around $25 for most applications, with government processing generally running 7–9 working days. The 1-year and 5-year Tourist categories, along with the Business and Medical categories, carry their own separate government fees reflecting their longer validity and different entry conditions.
Where travel dates are close, a priority or express processing option is typically available for an additional charge. This prioritizes your application on the service-provider side; the Indian government's own review timeline is fixed and doesn't change based on which service tier is chosen, so express processing helps most with the preparation and submission stages rather than the government approval stage itself.
Since fees are set per nationality, visa type and are periodically revised, it's worth confirming the current breakdown for Austria specifically before paying, rather than relying on a figure from an earlier trip or a general guide that doesn't distinguish by nationality.

Important Travel Guidelines for Austrian Travelers
Before departure, Austrian citizens should ensure of these things:
📌 Designated Entry Points
Your India e-Visa permits entry through designated airports, seaports and land ports. Though this authorized list of ports changes as per Indian Visa guidelines, you can always verify before applying. No other entry point is permitted. Exit is unrestricted, you may leave from any Immigration Check Post.
📌 The e-Arrival Card - before you board
All foreign nationals including Austrians entering India must complete a digital e-Arrival Card within 72 hours before arrival — via the official Indian government portal or the Indian Visa Su-Swagatam app.
📌 Extension and conversion of India e-visa
India e-Visas are non-extendable and non-convertible. If genuinely unable to depart within validity, apply at e-FRRO portal before expiry. Overstaying without approval is an illegal overstay under Indian immigration law. Stay within your declared purpose. Using an India e-Tourist Visa for business activity, or any other mismatch between declared and actual purpose, is a visa condition violation.
📌 India visa doesn't guarantee entry?
An approved India e-Visa authorizes you to travel; entry is ultimately at the discretion of the immigration officer at your arrival port. Carry your printed ETA, a confirmed return or onward ticket, accommodation details, and proof of sufficient funds.
📌 Use exact same passport
Travel on the exact passport used to apply; carry both old and new passports if renewed since applying.
📌 Ineligible Passport Holders
Military, defence, security, or police background holders are ineligible for an India e-Visa.
📌 Religious activities
Religious preaching, distributing religious material, or any conversion-related activity is prohibited on all visa types.
📌 Vaccination certificate
If transiting through a Yellow Fever endemic country within 6 days of India arrival, carry a valid vaccination certificate.
📌 Restricted Areas
Parts of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh require a Protected Area Permit in addition to your India e-Visa.
📌 Nationals with Pakistani Background
Austrian nationals of Pakistani lineage — parents or grandparents born in or permanently resident in Pakistan — are not eligible for an India e-Visa and must apply through the Indian Mission in Austria.
Do Austrian Children and Dual Nationals Need Their Own e-Visa?
Two questions come up often enough with Austrian applicants that they're worth addressing directly.
Every traveler needs an individual e-Visa, including children. There's no combined family or household application on the Indian e-Visa system, regardless of the traveler's age. Each child needs their own passport, their own passport-style photograph, and their own completed application; a parent or legal guardian fills in the form on the child's behalf and signs where required, but the resulting e-Visa is issued to the child individually, tied to their own passport.
Dual nationals must apply using the same passport they intend to travel on. If you hold Austrian citizenship alongside another nationality, the e-Visa application, and the actual passport presented at Indian immigration, must be the same document throughout. Applying with Austrian passport details and then attempting to travel on a different passport, or vice versa, will not match the ETA on file and can cause problems at the immigration counter. If you're uncertain which passport makes sense for a given trip, decide before applying rather than after, since the e-Visa is non-transferable between documents once issued.
Austria–India Travel Patterns and When to Apply
India has become an increasingly common long-haul destination for Austrian travelers, drawn by heritage sites, wellness and Ayurvedic retreats, and, on the business side, growing trade contact between Austrian companies and Indian markets. Austria's passport itself remains one of the strongest in the world, ranking in the joint-5th tier of the Henley Passport Index as of mid-2026 with visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 185 destinations, which makes India, a country requiring advance e-Visa approval for Austrian nationals, one of the more notable exceptions on an otherwise very open travel document.
Timing of the application matters as much as timing the trip. India's e-Visa processing is officially quoted at a minimum of 72 hours, and applications submitted during quieter months tend to track close to that. October through February, however, is peak season for e-Visa applications worldwide, coinciding with India's cooler, more travel-friendly months, and real-world processing during this stretch has recently been running closer to 8–10 business days rather than the official minimum. Austrian travelers planning a peak-season trip are better served applying several weeks ahead rather than relying on the fastest quoted turnaround, particularly around fixed flight bookings that leave no room for delay.
Why Austrian Citizens Choose the IVC for their Indian e-Visa?

For many Austrian travelers, the India e-Visa system offers a practical alternative to traditional visa procedures.
Instead of attending in-person appointments for standard short-term travel purposes, eligible applicants can complete much of the process digitally before departure. The system is particularly useful for tourism, business travel, and medical visits where travelers need a straightforward application route.
