Belgium to India | Here's Your India e-Visa Guide!

Belgium coordinates the legislative framework for half a continent. India doesn't follow anyone else's framework — it runs on its own logic, its own pace, and a scale that surprises most European on arrival. For Belgians, that contrast tends to be the point.

Before any of it, there's one thing to sort. Belgian passport holders require a visa for India, it's applied for online, and getting it right before you fly is straightforward — provided you know exactly what's required.

Yes, Belgian Citizens Need a Indian Visa and here's the Fastest Route

An Indian visa is mandatory for all Belgian passport holders travelling to India. There is no visa on arrival and no visa-free access. Your visa must be confirmed before departure.

Belgium as a nationality, is eligible for an Indian e-Visa — applied entirely online, paid online, and delivered to your inbox as an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). No visit to the Embassy of India in Brussels, no physical documents to submit, no consulate queue.

Two things to clarify before applying:

  1. OCI cardholders holding a Belgian passport are exempt from the visa requirement and do not need to apply.
  2. Diplomatic and official passport holders are not eligible for an India e-Visa and must apply directly through the Indian Mission in Belgium.

Travelers with only ordinary passport are eligible for applying through India e-Visa. Same goes for the citizens and residents from neighboring - Netherlands, France, Germany, and Luxembourg follow the same India e-Visa process — one application per person, one passport per application.

Always check before applying - whether your nationality is eligible for an India e-visa.

Which India e-Visa Is Right for Belgium Travelers?

Belgian nationals are eligible for all India e-Visa categories. Choosing the wrong one is among the most common application mistakes — and the visa fee is non-refundable if it causes a rejection. Select based strictly on your actual purpose of travel:

e-Tourist Visa — For holidays, sightseeing, yoga retreats, visiting friends or family, or short recreational courses (language, cooking, music, dance). Available in 30 days (double entry), 1 year (multiple entry), or 5 years (multiple entry). The 1-year and 5-year options cap total stay at 180 days within any single calendar year.

e-Business Visa — For meetings, trade visits, or any commercial activity. Valid for 1 year with multiple entries, each stay not exceeding 180 days. If any part of your trip involves business, this is the correct category — not the tourist visa.

e-Medical Visa — For treatment at a recognized Indian hospital. Valid for 60 days with triple entry. Requires a letter from the treating hospital in India.

e-Medical Attendant Visa — For companions accompanying an e-Medical Visa holder. Up to two attendants permitted per patient. Validity mirrors the patient's — 60 days, triple entry.

e-Conference Visa — For conferences, seminars, or workshops organized by Indian government bodies or recognised institutions. Requires a formal invitation letter and, in most cases, political clearance from India's Ministry of External Affairs.

What You Need to Apply - Documents and other Requirements

Prepare everything before you start — the form takes 10–15 minutes, and stopping mid-way is where errors creep in.

✔️ Valid Belgian passport (ordinary)

  1. original passport
  2. minimum 6 months validity from your India arrival date, with
  3. at least 2 blank pages.
  4. If your passport was issued within the last 6 months, carry your previous one too.

✔️ Scanned passport bio page —

  1. Clear, color PDF - 10 KB–300 KB saved with alphabet names.
  2. Name, date of birth, nationality, and issue and expiry date, place of issue should be visible
  3. Blurry scans pass the upload check and fail manual review.

✔️ Recent passport photograph —

  1. JPEG, 10 KB–1 MB
  2. Plain, clear, white background
  3. No glasses or headgears(unless for religious regions)
  4. Recent photo - taken within the last 6 months.
  5. File name in plain alphabets only — no numbers, spaces, or special characters.

✔️ Valid email address — An active email address is required where your ETA is delivered. A typo in address means your visa goes nowhere.

✔️ Category-specific supporting documents —

  1. business card and invitation letter (e-Business)
  2. hospital letter on letterhead (e-Medical)
  3. event invitation with clearances (e-Conference)
  4. All must be in English — non-English documents are liable for rejection.

✔️ Payment Method —

  1. Credit or debit card is required.
  2. A bank transaction charge of 3% applies additionally on the applicable India e-Visa fee.

Steps to Follow - From Application to Approval!

Step 1 — Choose how you apply

Option A: IVC Visas completes and submits the full application on your behalf.

Option B: You fill in the form and our team reviews it before submission. Both include a photo and document compliance check — because a non-refundable fee is a poor price for a preventable mistake.

Step 2 — Complete the application form

Enter your nationality, visa category, travel dates, and passport details. Every name, number, and date must match your passport exactly — a single character mismatch is grounds for rejection.

Step 3 — Upload your documents

Passport bio page and photograph. For business, medical, or conference applications, upload the relevant supporting document. English only, plain alphabet file names only.

Step 4 — Pay the visa fee

Fees are country and visa-type specific. Check the current India e-Visa fee for Belgian nationals before applying. All fees are non-refundable once submitted.

Step 5 — Receive your ETA and travel

Your approved ETA arrives by email as a PDF. Print a physical copy and carry it to India. Confirm your status reads 'GRANTED' on the official portal of India Visa website before flying. You may track your application anytime through IVC Visas.

Apply at least 2–3 weeks before your travel date — real-world processing averages 8–10 business days. The official minimum is 4 days, but that's the floor, not the target.

What Every Belgian Applicant Should Know Before Flying

✔️ Entry and Exit Points

India e-Visa holders may enter India through 33 designated airports, 33 designated seaports, or 4 designated land borders. First entry through these land ports is permitted; entry through any other land crossing is not. Exit may be through any authorized Immigration Check Post. Verify your entry point against the authorized entry and exit ports list before booking your itinery.

✔️ A granted visa is not a guaranteed entry

An approved ETA authorizes travel — it does not guarantee entry. Immigration officers at the port of arrival retain full discretion. Carry your printed ETA, match your declared purpose to your visa category, and have proof of return or onward travel ready.

✔️ Stay within your visa's purpose

Conducting business on an India e-Tourist Visa, or tourism activities on an India e-Business Visa, violates visa conditions and can result in denial of entry or deportation.

✔️ Complete the e-Arrival Card before boarding

All travellers to India must complete the digital e-Arrival Card within 72 hours before arrival — via the official portal or the Indian Visa Su-Swagatam app. Do this before you board, not at the airport. On arrival, biometrics will be captured and your passport stamped. Ensure the immigration stamp is affixed — if missed, contact the nearest FRRO.

✔️ Extension and conversion of India Visa

India e-Visas are non-extendable and non-convertible. If genuinely unable to depart within validity, apply for an extension online at the e-FRRO portal before expiry. Remaining beyond expiry without approval is an illegal overstay. For long-term purposes — employment, full-time study, research — exit India and apply through the Embassy of India in Brussels.

✔️ Pakistani lineage

Belgian nationals whose parents or grandparents were born in or were permanently resident in Pakistan are not eligible for an India e-Visa. A regular visa through the Indian Mission is required.

To apply for a regular/sicker India Visa, an applicant, whether from Thailand, Australia, Sweden or Canada, must visit the Indian Mission in their respective country

✔️ Same passport rule

Travel on the exact passport used to apply. If renewed since applying, carry both passports to Indian immigration.

✔️ Other restrictions that apply regardless of visa type

  1. Military, defense, security, or police background holders are not eligible for an India e-Visa.
  2. Religious preaching, distributing religious material, or any conversion-related activity is prohibited.
  3. If you have visited a Yellow Fever endemic country within 6 days of arrival, carry a valid vaccination certificate.
  4. Protected Area Permits (PAP) are required for parts of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh — apply separately in advance.

Your Pre-Departure Checklist

  1. Ordinary Belgian passport — 6+ months validity, 2 blank pages
  2. If passport issued within last 6 months, carry previous passport too
  3. Correct e-Visa category confirmed for your travel purpose
  4. Supporting documents in English for business, medical, or conference applications
