Taking your first trip to India? You're in for something special. From the snow-capped Himalayas to tropical beaches, from bustling markets to serene ashrams, from the iconic Taj Mahal to hidden gems only locals know about — India has a way of surprising, delighting, and sometimes overwhelming travelers from Belgium, Germany, Italy and all around the world, in the best possible way.
But let's be honest: planning your first international trip can feel overwhelming. Visas, documents, entry rules, what to pack, what to expect at the airport — there's a lot to figure out. And the last thing you want is to arrive at the airport only to realize you've missed something important.
That's exactly why we've created this guide. We'll walk you through everything you need to know before your first trip to India, from getting your visa sorted to understanding immigration procedures. And we'll show you how we can handle the complicated bits so you can focus on the fun part — planning your adventure.

Step 1: Understanding Your Indian Visa (The Most Important Part)
Indian e-visa are an electric authorization that defines the purpose of your visit. Before you book that flight, you need a visa to enter India. Think of it as your official permission to visit the country. The good news? India has made this process much easier with e-Visas that you can apply for entirely online.
What Types of Indian Visas Are Available?
India offers nine different visa categories based on why you're visiting:
1. India e-Tourist Visa: For sightseeing, visiting friends or family, short yoga programmes, or recreational short-term courses not exceeding 6 months. Available in three durations:
- 30 days — Valid for 30 days from your first arrival date, double entry
- 1 year — Valid for 1 year from ETA grant date, multiple entries. Total stay must not exceed 180 days within any single calendar year
- 5 years — Valid for 5 years from ETA grant date, multiple entries. Total stay must not exceed 180 days within any single calendar year
2. India e-Business Visa- Planning to attend business meetings, conferences, or trade shows? This visa is for you. It's generally valid for one year with multiple entries allowed.
3. India e-Medical Visa- Traveling to India for medical treatment? The e-Medical Visa is typically valid for 60 days and allows three entries. If you're bringing someone to accompany you, they'll need an e-Medical Attendant Visa.
4. India e-Medical Attendant Visa — For companions accompanying an India e-Medical Visa holder. Up to two attendants are permitted per patient. Validity mirrors the patient's visa — 60 days from first arrival, triple entry.
Can Everyone Apply for an India e-Visa?
Here's something important: not every nationality qualifies for an Indian e-Visa. Most countries are eligible, but there are exceptions. Before you get too far into planning, you need to verify that your passport allows you to apply online.
The Indian government maintains an official list of eligible nationalities, and this list does change from time to time.
How we help: Instead of searching through government websites, just click here to check your eligibility for India Visa.
Step 2: Documents You'll Need (Get These Ready Early)
Once you know which visa you need, it's time to gather your documents. Missing even one small requirement can delay your application, so let's make sure you have everything.
The Essential Checklist:
1. Your Passport
- Must be valid for at least 6 months from the date you plan to enter India
- Needs at least 2 blank pages for immigration stamps
- Should be in good condition (no torn or damaged pages)
First-timer tip: Check your passport expiration date right now. If it's expiring within the next 6-8 months, consider renewing it before applying for your visa.
2. Passport-Sized Photograph
- Recent photo taken within the last 6 months
- Plain white background — no patterns, textures, or shadows
- Front-facing, neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open
- No spectacles — glasses are explicitly not permitted on India e-Visa photos
- JPEG format, between 10 KB and 1 MB
- File name in plain alphabets only — no numbers, spaces, or special characters
This is where many first-time applicants run into trouble. The Indian visa portal has very specific technical requirements for photos-wrong dimensions, incorrect file size, or poor quality can get your application rejected.
How we help: Upload your photo to our platform or send it via e-mail or other platforms , and our team will check if it meets all specifications. If it doesn't, we'll resize it, adjust the background, or guide you on taking a compliant photo. No rejection due to photo issues — we guarantee it.
3. Scanned Copy of Your Passport's Bio-Data Page- This is the page in your passport with your photo and personal details. You'll need a clear, readable scan of this page to upload during your application.
4. Supporting Documents (Depending on Your Visa Type)
- For tourists: Hotel bookings or accommodation details, rough travel itinerary
- For business travelers: Business invitation letter from an Indian company and business card of the applicant.
- For medical visitors: Letter from the Indian hospital with appointment details
5. Payment Method- You'll need to pay the visa fee. The amount varies based on your nationality and visa type. Keep in mind that visa fees are generally non-refundable once processed.
How we help: We provide a personalized visa fee checklist based on your Nationality and Visa type. We tell you exactly what's required for your nationality and travel purpose.
Step 3: The Application Process (This Is where we make your visa application easy)
Here's the traditional way to apply: visit the Indian government visa portal, fill out a lengthy online form with dozens of fields, upload documents in specific formats, pay the fee, and hope you didn't make any mistakes. One wrong entry — like misspelling your name or entering an incorrect date — can lead to rejection or delays.
Sounds stressful for a first-time traveler, right?
Here's How IVC visas Simplifies Everything:
Step 1: Start on Our Website- Visit IVC visas to apply for Indian Visa and answer a few simple questions to fill the form:
- Where are you from? (current nationality)
- Why are you visiting India? (purpose of visit-medical, business, tourism, etc.)
- When do you plan to travel? (expected date of arrival)
We'll recommend the exact documents you need for the type of Indian Visa.
Step 2: Upload Your Documents- Our secure portal lets you upload everything from your phone, tablet, or computer. No need to worry about technical specifications as we handle that. You can also provide particular documents through given contacts.
Step 3: We Review Everything- This is the game-changer. Our experienced team manually reviews every document you upload:
- Is your photo compliant? If not, we fix it.
- Is your passport scan clear enough? We'll tell you if it needs improvement.
- Are all your details consistent? We cross-check everything.
Step 4: We Fill the Official Form for You-
You have two options:
Option A: Share your information with us, and we'll complete the entire government application form on your behalf. We've done this thousands of times and know exactly what immigration officers look for.
Option B: We send you the form with detailed instructions, you fill it at your own pace, and we review it before submission to catch any errors.
Either way, a trained professional checks your application before it goes to the Indian government on their official website.
Step 5: Secure Payment & Submission: We handle the payment process and submit your application to the official Indian visa portal. You'll receive:
- An Application ID for tracking
- Payment receipt
- Access to our real-time tracking dashboard
Step 6: Get Your India e-Visa: Once submitted, your India e-Visa application goes through official processing. While the government's stated window is 72 hours, real-world processing currently averages 8–10 business days. Plan accordingly — the 72-hour figure is the official minimum, not the reliable expectation. We also provide:
- A downloadable copy from your ivcvisas.com account
- A pre-departure checklist
- Tips for your arrival in India
Important note: Apply at least 2–3 weeks before your travel date — this is the practical benchmark given current processing timelines. The technical minimum is 4 days before arrival, but applying that close to travel is a risk not worth taking. During peak travel seasons (October–January, major Indian festivals), apply even earlier. The 30-day India e-Tourist Visa accepts applications up to 30 days in advance; all other India e-Visa categories accept applications up to 120 days in advance.
Like if you're travelling from USA to India, Canada to India , UK to India or Australia to India, you must refer these specific pages anchored in the links before submission of India Visa Application.
Step 4: Understanding Entry and Exit Rules
This is crucial for first-time travelers: when you have an Indian e-Visa, you can't just land at any airport in India. You must enter through one of the designated airports or seaports.
Where Can You Enter India with an e-Visa? Know about ENTRY PORTS
The Indian government has authorized specific entry points for India e-Visa holders, including major international airports such as:
Major Airports:
- Delhi (Indira Gandhi International Airport)
- Mumbai (Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport)
- Bengaluru (Kempegowda International Airport)
- Chennai (Chennai International Airport)
- Hyderabad (Rajiv Gandhi International Airport)
- Kolkata (Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport)
- Goa (Dabolim Airport)
- Kochi (Cochin International Airport)
- Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Varanasi, Amritsar, Lucknow, Guwahati, Thiruvananthapuram, and several others
Major Seaports: If you're arriving by cruise or ship, authorized seaports include:
Cochin, Goa, Mangalore, Chennai, Port Blair, Mumbai and many more
Major land ports:
- Raxaul (Bihar — India-Nepal border)
- Rupaidiha (Uttar Pradesh — India-Nepal border)
- Darranga (Assam — India-Bhutan/Bangladesh border)
- Jogbani (Bihar — India-Nepal border)
What About Leaving India? Know about EXIT PORTS
Here's the good part: while you must enter through a designated port, you can exit from any authorized Immigration Check Post in India. So, if you enter through Delhi but want to fly home from Goa, that's perfectly fine.
How we help: We always verify that your planned entry point is authorized for India e-Visa holders. If you're planning to arrive at an airport that doesn't accept e-Visas, we'll let you know in advance. You can verify for entry and exit ports before starting with your application.
Step 5: What to Expect at Indian Immigration (Your First Impression)
Let's walk through what happens when you land in India for the first time:
Before You Board Your Flight:
- Complete e-Arrival Card via the official portal at or through the Indian Visa Su-Swagatam mobile app.
- Carry a printed copy of your approved India e-Visa (ETA) and keep a digital copy on your phone.
- Have your passport ready (the same one you used for your visa application)
- Keep your return ticket details handy
At the Indian Airport:
Immigration Counter: Present your passport and ETA to the immigration officer. They might ask basic questions like:
- "What's the purpose of your visit?"
- "How long are you staying?"
- "Where will you be staying?"
Just answer honestly and confidently. You've got your India visa — you're all set!
Biometrics: Immigration will take your fingerprints and photo. This is standard procedure for all international visitors.
Entry Stamp: The officer will stamp your passport with your permitted length of stay. Check this stamp — it tells you exactly when you need to leave India.
Baggage Claim & Customs: Collect your luggage and proceed through customs. If you're carrying items that need to be declared (large amounts of cash, expensive electronics, etc.), use the red channel. Otherwise, take the green channel.
If you are planning to land at the Indira Gandhi International airport, take a look at IVC's immigration guide.
Step 6: Important Rules and Restrictions (Stay Legal, Stay Safe)
As a first-time traveler to India, there are some legal guidelines you absolutely must know:
Never misrepresent your purpose of visit: Your India e-Visa category must match your actual travel purpose. Conducting business on an India e-Tourist Visa, or any other mismatch between your declared purpose and actual activity, violates visa conditions and can result in denial of entry or deportation. Apply for the right India visa category from the start — changing it after arrival is not permitted.
India e-Visas are non-extendable and non-convertible: An India e-Visa cannot be extended or converted into any other visa category while you are inside India. If you need to stay longer, you must exit India before your current visa expires and reapply from outside the country. If departure is genuinely impossible due to an emergency — medical or otherwise — apply for an extension at e-FRRO portal before your India visa expires.
Remaining beyond your visa's validity without approved extension constitutes an illegal overstay under Indian immigration law.
Complete the e-Arrival Card before boarding: As of April 2026, the digital e-Arrival Card is mandatory for all travelers entering India. It must be completed within 72 hours before arrival via the official portal or the Indian Visa Su-Swagatam app — not at the airport. See Step 5 for full details.
Religious activities are prohibited: All foreign nationals — regardless of India visa type — are prohibited from preaching religious ideologies, making speeches at religious gatherings, distributing religious material in any form, or engaging in any conversion-related activity. This applies to all India e-Visa categories without exception.
Yellow Fever vaccination: If you have departed from or transited through a Yellow Fever endemic country within 6 days of your India arrival, you must carry a valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate in original. Failure to produce it may result in mandatory quarantine of up to 6 days on arrival in India.
Suppressing background information: If you have a defence, military, security, or police background — serving or retired — you are not eligible for an India e-Visa. Attempting to enter India on an India e-Visa while suppressing this information may result in denial of entry and deportation to your port of embarkation.
Pakistani nationality and lineage: Pakistani nationals, and nationals of any country whose parents or grandparents (paternal or maternal) were born in or were permanently resident in Pakistan, are not eligible for an India e-Visa. A regular India visa applied through the relevant Indian Mission is required.
Same passport rule: You must travel on the exact passport used when applying for your India e-Visa. If you have obtained a new passport since applying, carry both your old and new passports to Indian immigration. Entry will be permitted on the new passport provided the old passport with the ETA is also presented.
Special permits for restricted areas: An India e-Visa is not valid for visiting Protected Areas, Restricted Areas, or Cantonment Areas. Parts of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, and certain border regions require a Protected Area Permit (PAP) obtained separately and in advance. If your itinerary includes these regions, apply for the PAP through the relevant civil authority before you travel.
Step 7: First-Timer Mistakes to Avoid
Let's learn from others' experiences. Here are common mistakes first-time travelers to India make:
- Applying Too Late- "I'm traveling next week — can I get my visa in 2 days?" Maybe, but why risk it? Apply at least one week before your travel date, ideally 2-3 weeks during busy seasons.
- Booking Non-Refundable Flights Before Getting the Visa- Always get your visa approved before booking expensive, non-refundable tickets. While rejections are rare with proper applications, they do happen.
- Wrong Photo Specifications- This is the #1 reason for application delays. Self-taken photos often don't meet requirements.
How we help: We fix photo issues before submission. Zero delays due to technical problems.
- Spelling Errors- Your name on the visa application must match your passport exactly. Even a small spelling difference can cause issues at immigration.
How we help: We cross-verify every detail against your passport scan to ensure perfect accuracy.
- Not Carrying Physical Copies "My e-Visa is on my phone — isn't that enough?" Technical issues happen. Always carry a printed copy of your ETA.
- Ignoring the Entry Port Restriction Planning to land at a small regional airport? Make sure it's authorized for e-Visa entry.
