India Visa for Indonesian Citizens - Apply Online!

India and Indonesia's connection goes back further than most modern travel guides bother mentioning. Java appears in the Ramayana as "Yawadvipa," and centuries of maritime trade carried Hindu-Buddhist influence into the Majapahit and Srivijaya empires, leaving behind landmarks like Borobudur and Prambanan that still draw scholars today. The two countries also share a more recent chapter: both gained independence around the same time, and Indonesia's first president was the guest of honor at India's very first Republic Day in 1950. With direct flights now connecting the two countries, India has become one of the largest sources of international tourists to Bali and same goes the other way.

None of that history simplifies the paperwork, though. If you're an Indonesian citizen planning a trip to India, you'll need an India e-Visa before you fly, and IVC Visas covers exactly what that involves.

Do Indonesian Citizens Need a Visa for India?

Yes. Indonesia is on India's eligible-nationality list for the India e-Visa, and there's no visa-on-arrival or visa free access for Indonesian passport holders. Your India e-Visa must be applied for and approved online before travel.

A couple of exceptions are worth knowing:

  1. OCI cardholders (Overseas Citizens of India) are exempt from the visa requirement entirely.
  2. Diplomatic and official passport holders can't use the India e-Visa system and need to apply through the Embassy of India in Jakarta directly, which also maintains consulates in Bali and Medan.

Everyone else with an ordinary Indonesian passport applies through the India e-Visa portal.

India e-Visa Categories for Indonesian Travelers

Most Indonesian applicants apply for one of three categories.

  1. The India e-Tourist Visa covers sightseeing, family visits, short yoga or wellness programs, and casual travel. It's available in three durations- 30 days (double entry), 1 year, and 5 years (both multiple entry); and it's what the large majority of Indonesian travelers apply for.
  2. The India e-Business Visa is for trade visits, meetings, and commercial exploration, valid one year from the date your ETA is granted, with multiple entries permitted. Given how active India-Indonesia trade already is, particularly in palm oil, coal, and increasingly technology and energy, this is a common category for Indonesian business travelers.
  3. The India e-Medical Visa is for treatment at a recognized Indian hospital, valid 60 days from first arrival with triple entry, and requires a letter from the treating hospital. A companion can apply for an e-Medical Attendant Visa under the same terms, with up to two attendants permitted per patient.

The remaining categories includes e-Student, e-Family, e-Transit, e-Miscellaneous, and e-Production Investment which are available to Indonesian nationals for specific purposes. If before you apply for your trip, confirm category requirements through IVC Visas before submitting.

None of these categories convert into one another once granted, so confirming the right one before applying matters.

India e-Visa Cost for Indonesian Citizens | Fee Waiver Advantage

This is the single most important thing for Indonesian travelers to know before applying: the India e-Tourist Visa currently carries no government fee at all for Indonesian citizens, across every duration. Per the official fee schedule dated 20 February 2026, all four e-Tourist Visa options — the 30-day visa in both the April–June and July–March windows, the 1-year visa, and the 5-year visa, are listed at $0.

This fee waiver is specific to the e-Tourist Visa category. The e-Business, e-Medical, e-Medical Attendant, and e-Conference visas are separate categories with their own fee table, and Indonesian nationals are listed at $0 there as well, so in practice, every standard e-Visa category currently carries no government fee for Indonesian citizens.

The one charge that still applies regardless of category is the bank transaction fee, currently set at 3% of the applicable visa fee per the official portal. Since the visa fee itself is $0, this charge will typically be the only cost shown at checkout, but it's worth confirming the live figure when you apply, since this fee schedule is dated and subject to revision by the Indian government at any time.

The fee waiver doesn't apply to every other eligible nationality including Canada, Netherlands and Mexico. You must check for visa fee before applying for India e-visa.

What Documents Do Indonesian Applicants Need?

For the every Indian visa, the requirements are straightforward and necessary:

  1. A valid Indonesian passport with at least 6 months' remaining validity and 2 blank pages
  2. A recent passport-style photo on a plain white background
  3. A clear scan of your passport's bio page
  4. A valid email address, since your approved ETA is delivered there
  5. Debit or credit card required for payment

No itinerary, accommodation proof, or invitation letter is required for tourism, though immigration officers on arrival may still ask to see a return ticket and proof of sufficient funds.

➤ For the India e-Business Visa, you'll also need an invitation letter from the company you're visiting in India.

➤ For the e-Medical Visa, a letter from the treating hospital, written in English, is required in addition to the standard documents.

Guidelines Indonesian Travelers Should Know!

A short context note before the list: most of these rules exist either to control where and how foreign nationals enter India, or to prevent visa categories from being used outside their intended purpose. They're not unique to Indonesian applicants, but they catch travelers from every country fairly often.

📌 Entry is restricted to designated ports. You can only enter through an authorized airport, seaport, or land port; exit is unrestricted from any Immigration Check Post.

📌 The e-Arrival Card is separate from your India e-Visa, Mandatory since April 2026 for all foreign nationals, it must be completed within 72 hours before arrival.

📌 Your visa category must match your actual activity. Using a tourist visa for business is a condition violation, not a minor technicality.

📌 India e-Visas are non-extendable and non-convertible, regardless of category. Genuine emergencies are handled through the e-FRRO portal, applied for before your visa expire.

📌 Travelers with a defence, military, security, or police background aren't eligible for an e-Visa and need to apply through the Indian Mission instead.

📌 Yellow Fever vaccination: If you have visited a Yellow Fever endemic country within 6 days prior to your India arrival, you must carry a valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate. Failure to produce it may result in quarantine on arrival.

📌 Restricted areas like Parts of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh require a Protected Area Permit (PAP) in addition to your e-Visa. Apply for this separately in advance if your itinerary includes these regions.

📌 Same passport rule: Travel on the exact passport used to apply. If your passport has been renewed since applying, carry both old and new passports to Indian immigration.

📌 Pakistani lineage: Indonesian nationals whose parents or grandparents were born in or were permanently resident in Pakistan are not eligible for an India e-Visa. A regular visa applied through the Indian Mission is required.

On the Ground in India: Things to know after landing in India

Indonesia and India are both vast, diverse countries shaped by Hindu-Buddhist history, and travelers from one tend to find the other more navigable than first-timers from further afield. That familiarity is real, but India has its own logistical rhythms worth understanding before you arrive.

Halal Food and Muslim Travelers

Indonesia is the world's largest Muslim-majority country, and for Indonesian Muslim travelers, India is considerably more halal-friendly than the country's predominantly Hindu identity might suggest. Several things are worth knowing:

  1. Halal-certified restaurants are widely available in major cities, particularly in Muslim-majority neighborhoods in Delhi (Old Delhi's Jama Masjid area), Mumbai (Mohammed Ali Road), Hyderabad, and Kerala (which has a significant Muslim population along the Malabar coast).
  2. Most major hotel chains in tourist areas cater to a broad international clientele and clearly label or separate food options.
  3. Beef is largely unavailable or restricted across most Indian states (it's a legal prohibition in several), but mutton, chicken, and fish are widely available and form the base of most Muslim-influenced Indian cuisines.

Destinations Indonesian Travelers Connect With

The shared Hindu-Buddhist heritage makes certain Indian destinations particularly resonant for Indonesian visitors:

  1. Odisha: The temple complexes of Bhubaneswar and Konark have direct architectural and iconographic parallels with Prambanan and Borobudur, and they're significantly less crowded than Rajasthan's more-visited sites.
  2. Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu: Shore Temple and the UNESCO-listed rock-cut monuments reflect the same Pallava artistic tradition that influenced Indonesian temple architecture.
  3. Varanasi: The spiritual weight of the Ganges and the city's ritual life resonates with Indonesian travelers from a Javanese Hindu or general spiritual tourism background.
  4. Rajasthan: The forts, palaces, and desert landscapes of Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Jaisalmer are consistently popular with Indonesian tourists.

Getting Around and Practical Details

  1. Currency: Indian Rupee at approximately 130–135 INR per 10,000 Indonesian Rupiah in early 2026. ATMs available in cities; carry small-denomination cash for local use.
  2. Transport: Indian Railways is the backbone of long-distance travel. Book through IRCTC's tourist quota 6–8 weeks ahead for overnight routes. Domestic flights connect islands of the itinerary efficiently — Indigo, Air India, and Akasa Air cover most routes.
  3. Language: English is widely used in tourism, government, and business, making navigation comfortable for Indonesian travelers who speak it.
  4. Climate: October to March is optimal for most of India. Bali and Jakarta are year-round destinations; India is not — the April–June heat and June–September monsoon require planning.

Why Indonesian Travelers Choose IVC Visas?

Indonesian citizens use the same India e-Visa structure as everyone else in the region. Nationals of Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines go through identical categories and review steps, though their specific fees and any active offers can differ, so it's worth checking each traveler's terms individually if you're part of a mixed-nationality group.

A fee waiver on certain categories doesn't reduce the importance of getting the rest of the application right. Document requirements, photo specifications, and category selection all still matter just as much, and a small mismatch can still mean delays regardless of what the visa itself costs.

At IVC Visas, every application is reviewed before it reaches the government portal, checking your documents, your photo, and your category against what you're actually traveling for.
