India Doesn't Come Easy on a Norwegian Passport; But the India e-Visa Does

The Norwegian passport ranks fourth in the world on the Henley Passport Index 2026 — granting visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 185 destinations globally. It is one of the most powerful travel documents on the planet.

India is not among those 185 countries.

Norwegian passport holders need an Indian visa before they travel to India — no exceptions, no visa on arrival, no visa-free window. What they do have is access to India's e-Visa system: an entirely online process that requires no embassy visit, no physical documents to post, and no consulate appointment. Your India visa arrives by email before you board.

Does Norway as a nationality qualify for an Indian e-visa?

A Norwegian citizen holding a Norwegian passport qualifies for an Indian e-visa. A British national living in Oslo applies on their British passport under UK eligibility rules. A Pakistani national residing in Norway is not eligible for an India e-Visa regardless of their Norwegian residency status — a regular India visa through the Embassy of India in Oslo is required instead.

One further note: holders of an OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) card — including those of Indian origin living in Norway — are exempt from the India visa requirement entirely, regardless of which passport they carry.

If you hold an ordinary Norwegian passport and plan to travel to India for tourism, business, medical treatment, or a conference, you're in the right place.

Confirm your full eligibility with IVC Visas before starting.

What the India e-Visa Is, and What It Isn't

The India e-Visa is an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) — a digital visa issued by the Government of India that authorises you to travel to and enter India. It is applied, paid online, and delivered as a PDF to your registered email address.

It is not a stamp in your passport. It is not issued at the airport. It is not available on arrival for Norwegian nationals. It must be secured before you fly — ideally 2–3 weeks before your travel date, given that real-world processing currently averages 8–10 business days despite the official 72-hour window.

Once approved, print it. Carry a physical copy. Indian immigration at all designated entry points requires it at the arrival counter.

Choose your India e-Visa | Which One Is Right for Your Trip?

Choosing the wrong category is one of the most common and costly application mistakes — the fee is non-refundable if a mismatch causes rejection. Match your category to your actual travel purpose:

  1. India e-Tourist Visa — Tourism, sightseeing, visiting friends or family, short yoga programmes, Ayurveda retreats, or short recreational courses not exceeding 6 months. Available in three durations: 30 days (double entry, valid from first arrival), 1 year (multiple entry, 90 days per visit, max 180 days in any calendar year), and 5 years (multiple entry, 90 days per visit, max 180 days in any calendar year).
  2. India e-Business Visa — Business meetings, trade visits, or any commercial activity. Valid for 1 year, multiple entries, continuous stay per visit not exceeding 180 days. If any part of your trip involves business, this is the correct category — not the tourist visa.
  3. India e-Medical Visa — Medical treatment at a recognized Indian hospital. Valid for 60 days from first arrival, triple entry. Requires a letter from the treating hospital in India.
  4. India e-Medical Attendant Visa — For companions accompanying an e-Medical Visa holder. Up to two attendants permitted per patient. Validity mirrors the patient's — 60 days, triple entry.
  5. India e-Conference Visa — For conferences, seminars, or workshops organized by Indian government bodies or recognised institutions. Valid for 30 days from arrival, single entry. Requires a formal invitation letter and political clearance from India's Ministry of External Affairs.

What You Need to Apply?

Documents to upload:

✔️ Valid ordinary Norwegian passport — minimum 6 months validity from your India arrival date, at least 2 blank pages. Diplomatic and official passport holders are not eligible for an Indian e-Visa and must apply through the Embassy of India in Oslo.

Same goes for the nationals of Thailand, Portugal, Sri Lanka, UAE - If you don't own an ordinary passport, a visit to the Indian Mission in your country, is a must!

✔️ Scanned passport bio page — colored PDF, 10 KB–300 KB, all personal details clearly legible. Blurry or dark scans pass the upload check and fail manual review.

✔️ Recent passport photograph — JPEG, 10 KB–1 MB, plain white background, no glasses, taken within 6 months. File name in plain alphabets only — no numbers, spaces, or special characters. No digital editing or background removal permitted.

✔️ Supporting documents if applicable — official letterhead letter for short-term courses or voluntary work (e-Tourist); business card and invitation letter (e-Business); hospital letter (e-Medical); event invitation and clearances (e-Conference). All must be in English.

What else you need:

✔️ Valid email address — your approved India e-Visa ETA is delivered here. A typo means your visa goes nowhere.

✔️ Payment card — credit or debit card. A bank transaction charge of 3% applies additionally. Check the current India e-Visa fee for Norwegian nationals before applying. All fees are non-refundable once submitted.

Applying Through IVC Visas | Know these Five Steps

Step 1 — Choose your application option

Option A: IVC Visas completes and submits the full India e-Visa application on your behalf.

Option B: You fill in the form yourself and our team reviews it before submission. Both options include a photo and document compliance check before anything reaches the government portal — because a non-refundable fee is a poor price for a preventable mistake.

Step 2 — Complete your application form

Enter your nationality, India e-Visa category, intended travel dates, passport and other details. Every name, date, and number must match your passport exactly. A single mismatch between your form and your passport is grounds for rejection.

Step 3 — Upload your documents

Passport bio page scan and photograph. If applicable, upload your supporting document. English only. Plain alphabet file names only.

Step 4 — Pay the India e-Visa fee

Fees vary by category and duration. A 3% bank transaction charge applies. All fees non-refundable once submitted.

Step 5 — Receive your ETA and prepare

Your approved India e-Visa ETA arrives by email as a PDF. Print a physical copy and carry it to India. Confirm your status reads 'GRANTED' at indianvisaonline.gov.in before flying. You can also track your India visa application through IVC Visas at any stage.

Apply at least 2–3 weeks before travel. The 30-day e-Tourist Visa accepts applications up to 30 days in advance; all other categories allow up to 120 days.

Rules That Apply Once Your India e-Visa Is Approved

Entry and Exit points

India e-Visa holders from Norway may enter India through 33 designated airports, 33 designated seaports, or 4 designated land ports — Raxaul, Rupaidiha, Darranga, and Jogbani. Entry through any other crossing is not permitted.

You may exit from any authorised Immigration Check Post. Verify your entry point against the authorised India entry and exit ports list before booking.

A granted India visa does not guarantee entry

An approved ETA authorises travel — it does not guarantee entry. Immigration officers at the port of arrival retain full discretion. Carry your printed ETA, a return or onward ticket, and proof of accommodation and sufficient funds.

Complete the e-Arrival Card before boarding

As of April 2026, all travellers entering India must complete a digital e-Arrival Card within 72 hours before arrival — via the official portal or the Indian Visa Su-Swagatam app. Do this before you board, not at the airport. On arrival, biometrics will be captured and your passport stamped. Ensure the stamp is affixed before leaving the immigration counter.

Stay within your India visa's declared purpose

Activities must strictly match your declared visa category. Business on an e-Tourist Visa, or tourism on an e-Business Visa, violates conditions and can result in denial of entry or deportation.

Extension and conversion of India e-visa

India e-Visas are non-extendable and non-convertible. If genuinely unable to depart within validity, apply at e-FRRO portal before expiry. Overstaying without approval is an illegal overstay under Indian immigration law. For long-term purposes — employment, study, research — exit India and apply through the Embassy of India in Oslo.

Other restrictions

  1. Military, defence, security, or police background holders are ineligible for an India e-Visa.
  2. Religious preaching, distributing religious material, or any conversion-related activity is prohibited on all visa types.
  3. If transiting through a Yellow Fever endemic country within 6 days of India arrival, carry a valid vaccination certificate.
  4. Parts of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh require a Protected Area Permit in addition to your India e-Visa.
  5. Norwegian nationals of Pakistani lineage — parents or grandparents born in or permanently resident in Pakistan — are not eligible for an India e-Visa and must apply through the Indian Mission in Oslo.
  6. Travel on the exact passport used to apply — carry both old and new passports if renewed since applying.

Before You Board | Eight Things to Confirm

  1. Ordinary Norwegian passport — not diplomatic or official
  2. Passport valid 6+ months from India arrival date — 2 blank pages minimum
  3. Correct India e-Visa category confirmed for your travel purpose
  4. Supporting documents in English if applying for business, medical, or conference visa
  5. Entry point confirmed against the authorised ports list.
  6. e-Arrival Card completed within 72 hours before arrival
  7. Status reads 'GRANTED' before flying
  8. ETA printed and carried physically — not digital only

Why Choose IVC, all the way from Norway?

Norway in November is dark by 3pm. India in November is warm, windy, and at its most inviting — the Golden Triangle in peak condition, Rajasthan's desert light at its sharpest, Kerala's backwaters at their most serene. The contrast between where you're leaving and where you're landing is part of what makes the trip worth it.

Fellow Nordic travelers from Sweden, Denmark, and Finland follow the same India e-Visa route — one application, one passport, confirmed before boarding.

At IVC Visas, we handle India e-Visa applications for Norwegian nationals and travelers from over 175 countries — reviewing every application before it reaches the portal — photo compliance, document accuracy, category selection, name matching. Norwegian applications are processed with the same rigour as every other nationality we serve. The India e-Visa fee is non-refundable. A review before submission is the simplest way to protect it.
