India shares a past with of developing the philosophy of non-violent resistance on South African soil which lead a movement that changed history. Today, South African citizens travel to India for sightseeing, discovering their historic landscapes, attend business meetings, set ventures, or engage in yoga programs or medical treatments. But, before all of this, they need an India Visa to enter the nation, and one of them comes completely free.

Do You Need a India Visa? The Short Answer is Yes!
South African passport holders are required to obtain an Indian visa before entering India. There is no visa-free access and no visa on arrival for South African nationals. Your India e-Visa must be applied for online and confirmed before you board.
If you hold an Overseas Citizen of India card alongside your South African passport, you are exempt from the India visa requirement entirely and do not need to apply.
Diplomatic and official passport holders are not eligible for an India e-Visa. They need to apply directly through the High Commission of India in Pretoria, which covers consular matters for both South Africa and Lesotho.
For everyone else, ordinary South African passport in hand, travel purpose confirmed, then India e-Visa is the route.
India e-Visa Categories Available to South African Nationals
The India e-Visa system currently has nine categories. For most South African travelers, three cover everything..
📷 India e-Tourist Visa
The one most South Africans apply for. Covers holidays, sightseeing, visiting family, yoga and Ayurveda retreats, and short recreational courses not exceeding six months. Three duration options: 30 days (double entry, valid from first arrival), 1 year (multiple entry, up to 180 days per calendar year), and 5 years (multiple entry, up to 180 days per calendar year). The India e-Tourist Visa is the starting point for most first-time visitors.
🛄 India e-Business Visa
Covers trade visits, business meetings, commercial exploration, and industrial tours. Valid for one year from ETA grant, multiple entries, with each continuous stay not exceeding 180 days.
🩺 India e-Medical Visa
For South African nationals travelling to India for treatment at a recognized Indian hospital, including Ayurvedic and traditional medicine. Valid for 60 days from first arrival with triple entry. Requires a letter from the treating hospital in India on official letterhead. Up to two companions may accompany a patient on an e-Medical Attendant Visa under identical conditions.
The remaining six categories - e-film, e-Student, e-Family, e-Transit, e-Miscellaneous, e-Production Investment, and specialized sub-types for mountaineering, are available to South African nationals but cover more specific circumstances. If any of these apply to your travel purpose, confirm category and document requirements through the official portal before applying.
A note on the fee: South African passport holders pay no Indian government e-Visa fee across all categories — tourist, business, medical, conference, student, and others. The $00 fee applies currently. The IVC Visas service fee remains applicable as a separate charge for the preparation, review, and submission assistance provided.
If you are a national of France, Belgium, Saudi Arabia or other 17 eligible nationalities, you can avail these India e-visa categories too and apply with IVC!
What You Need Before You Start | Know your Requirements!
Two things to upload, two things to have ready:
- Passport bio page scan: PDF format, 10 KB–300 KB, full color, all personal details clearly legible. The upload check verifies size and format — a blurry or dark scan passes that check and fails the manual review that follows. Scan at high contrast with all four corners of the page visible.
- Passport photograph JPEG format, 10 KB–1 MB, plain white background, no glasses, taken within the last six months. Square dimensions. File name in plain alphabets only — no numbers, spaces, or special characters. No digital editing, background removal, or retouching permitted.
Have these things ready —
- Email address: Your approved ETA arrives here and nowhere else. A typo in your email means your India e-Visa is delivered to no one. Confirm it before submitting.
- Card for payment: Credit or debit. A 3% bank transaction charge applies additionally on the applicable India e-Visa fee. The fee is non-refundable once submitted — confirmed granted or rejected. Check current pricing before applying.
For business, medical, or specialist applications: All supporting documents must be submitted in English and in PDF format. Letters in Afrikaans or any other language are liable for rejection regardless of their content.
Applying Through IVC Visas
Option A: You provide your documents and information; IVC Visas completes and submits the full application on your behalf.
Go through these steps:
- Select your nationality - South Africa, India Visa category, date and port of arrival.
- Enter your passport details and other details in the IVC form, which is further required to fill the official form.
- Upload relevant documents: your ordinary passport, passport sized photo and other supporting documents relevant to your visa type.
- Pay the India Visa fee, it varies according to the nationality. You can verify from the portal, it also shows when you check out.
- We process your India e-visa application and provide you with an application ID to track your application.
- After your application says: GRANTED, you are provided with your ETA. Receive it through your e-mail and download it as a PDF. Print it and save it for the immigration.
Option B: You fill in the form yourself and our team reviews it before submission, checking photo compliance, document quality, name accuracy, and category selection before anything reaches the government portal.
Both options include the same pre-submission check. The review matters because the India e-Visa portal processes what you submit; it does not flag errors before your non-refundable fee is committed. Name mismatches, non-compliant photographs, and wrong category selection are among the most common rejection causes, all preventable with a proper check before submission.

Apply at least 2–3 weeks before travel because currently the official processing averages 8–10 business days. The official 72-hour figure is the minimum, not the expectation. Once submitted, track your application through the portal and confirm status reads 'GRANTED' before flying. Never board on a pending status.
Before You Fly, Know Guidelines That Matter The Most
📌 Where you can enter?
Your India e-Visa permits entry through designated international airports, seaports, or land ports. No other entry point is permitted. Exit is unrestricted, you may leave from any authorized Immigration Check Post. Confirm your entry point against the authorized ports list before booking, as the official changes.
📌 The e-Arrival Card - before you board, not on arrival
Since April 2026, all foreign nationals entering India must complete a digital e-Arrival Card within 72 hours before arrival via the official Indian government portal or the Indian Visa Su-Swagatam app. This is separate from your India e-Visa. Complete it before your flight, not at the airport. On arrival, biometrics are captured and your passport is stamped; ensure the stamp is affixed before leaving the counter.
📌Your India visa doesn't guarantee entry, other requirements for Immigration
An approved India e-Visa authorizes you to travel — entry is ultimately at the discretion of the immigration officer at your arrival port. Carry your printed ETA, a confirmed return or onward ticket, accommodation details, and proof of sufficient funds.
📌 Stay within your declared purpose
Using an India e-Tourist Visa for business activity, or any other mismatch between declared and actual purpose, is a visa condition violation and grounds for denial of entry or deportation. Select the right category before you apply.
📌 Extensions and overstays
India e-Visas are non-extendable and non-convertible. If you genuinely cannot depart within validity due to an emergency, apply at indianfrro.gov.in before your visa expires, not after. Remaining beyond validity without approval is an illegal overstay under Indian law. For long-term purposes including employment, study, or research, exit India and apply through the Indian Mission in South Africa.
📌 Other conditions that apply to all India e-Visa holders
- Those with a defence, military, security, or police background are not eligible for an India e-Visa, apply through the Indian Mission.
- Religious preaching, distributing religious material, or conversion-related activity is prohibited on all visa types.
- South African nationals whose parents or grandparents were born in or were permanently resident in Pakistan are not eligible for an India e-Visa.
- If you have transited through a Yellow Fever endemic country within 6 days of arrival in India, carry a valid vaccination certificate.
- Parts of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh require a Protected Area Permit in addition to your India e-Visa; apply separately before travel.
- Travel on the exact passport used to apply. Carry both old and new passports if renewed since applying.

Why South Africans Consider IVC Visas for their India e-Visa?

When Gandhi left South Africa for India in 1915, he took everything he had learned- the discipline, the philosophy, the method; and built a movement with it. South African travelers heading the other way today will find a country that remembers history. India and South Africa have been exchanging people, culture, and ideas for well over a century.
October to March is the recommended travel window. Rajasthan's fortified cities, Kerala's backwaters, the Ganges at Varanasi, the Himalayan foothills of Rishikesh, none of it requires more than a correctly submitted India e-Visa to access.
Other African travelers- from Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania, and Ethiopia require the same India e-Visa to explore India.
One application, one passport, confirmed before boarding!
At IVC Visas, we review every India e-Visa application before it reaches the portal. For South African travelers applying for the first time or the fifth, the review catches what the portal doesn't and protects the fee you've already committed.
