South Korea holds a rare distinction in international travel — it is one of only three nationalities in the world that India offers a Visa-on-Arrival to. But most South Korean don't know it exists, and fewer still know when it's actually the better choice.
The short answer for most people: the India e-Visa — applied online before you travel — is the smarter, more flexible, and more reliable route. Pre-approved before you fly, accepted at over 30 airports and seaports, and available across all major visa categories. The Visa-on-Arrival is a useful fallback, but the e-Visa puts the decision in your hands before you board.
Here's everything South Korean passport holders need to know.
Do South Koreans Require a valid Indian Visa?
South Korean nationals have two visa options when travelling to India:
India e-Visa:
✅ Applied online before travel.
✅ Pre-approved.
✅ Delivered by email, accepted at 30+ designated airports and seaports.
✅ Available for tourism, business, medical, and conference purposes.
✅ Suitable for all travelers — first-time visitors especially.
Visa-on-Arrival (VoA):
✅ Available at 6 designated airports only — Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad.
✅ Issued at the immigration counter on arrival. Valid for up to 60 days with double entry.
✅ Non-extendable, non-convertible, and requires payment at the counter.
✅ Best suited to returning travellers making a last-minute trip.
For most South Korean travellers — and certainly for first-time visitors — the Indian e-Visa is the recommended route. Indian authorities themselves advise first-time visitors to use the India e-Visa rather than the VoA.
India e-Visa Categories for South Korean Nationals
South Korean passport holders are eligible for all five India e-Visa categories. Applying under the wrong category is one of the most common mistakes that leads to delays or rejection — choose carefully based on your actual purpose of travel.
e-Tourist Visa For holidays, sightseeing, visiting friends or family, yoga retreats, or short recreational courses. Available in three durations — 30 days (double entry), 1 year (multiple entry), and 5 years (multiple entry). The 1-year and 5-year options allow cumulative stays of up to 180 days per calendar year. Check India e-Tourist Visa explained by IVC Visas.
e-Business Visa For business meetings, trade discussions, industrial visits, or exploring investment opportunities. The India e-Business Visa remains valid for 1 year with multiple entries, each stay not exceeding 180 days.
e-Medical Visa For South Korean nationals travelling to India for medical treatment at a recognized Indian hospital. The India e-Medical Visa is valid for 60 days with triple entry. Requires a letter from the treating hospital in India.
e-Medical Attendant Visa For companions travelling alongside an e-Medical Visa holder. Up to two attendants are permitted per patient. Validity mirrors the patient's visa - 60 days, triple entry.
e-Conference Visa For attending conferences, seminars, or workshops organized by Indian government bodies or recognized institutions. Requires an official event invitation and, in some cases, political clearance.
What Documents Do South Korean Nationals Need?
Gather everything before you start, errors made mid-application are where things go wrong.
✔️ Valid South Korean passport: minimum 6 months validity from your intended arrival date in India, with at least 2 blank pages for immigration stamps
✔️ Scanned passport bio page: clear, color scan showing your name, date of birth, nationality, and passport expiry date
✔️ Recent passport photograph: JPEG format, plain white background, no glasses, taken within the last 6 months
✔️ Valid email address: your approved ETA is delivered here; double-check before submitting
✔️ Payment Method: credit or debit; a bank transaction charge of 3% applies additionally on the visa fee
✔️ Category-specific documents: business invitation letter (e-Business), hospital letter from India (e-Medical), event invitation (e-Conference). All supporting documents must be in English — documents in any other language are liable to be rejected
A photo that fails the format check or a passport scan that's too dark to read clearly. These are exactly the kinds of issues that get flagged after the fee is already paid and non-refundable. Our team at IVC Visas reviews, and even check for document errors both before your application reaches the portal. Make sure to learn about such errors prior application.
How to Apply Through IVC Visas?
Applying through IVC Visas means your application is checked by our team before it's submitted. Document formatting, photo compliance, passport data accuracy — we verify it all before anything reaches the government portal.
Choose your method:
Option A — IVC Visas handles the complete application on your behalf. You provide the information and documents; we do the rest.
Option B — You complete the application yourself, and our team reviews and corrects it before submission.
Steps you may follow-
Step 1: Fill in your application with IVC: nationality(South Korea/Republic of Korea), visa type, travel dates, passport and personal details needed for the actual India e-visa application.
Step 2: Upload your documents: passport bio page and photograph. For business, medical, or conference visas, upload the required supporting document.
Step 3: Pay the visa fee at checkout. Fees vary by visa type and duration. Check the current India e-Visa fee for South Korean nationals before applying. All fees are non-refundable once submitted.
Step 4: Once approved, your ETA arrives by email as a PDF. Download it, print it, and carry a physical copy when you travel.
The official processing window is 72 hours, but real-world processing currently averages 8–10 business days. Apply at least 2–3 weeks before your travel date, and earlier if you're travelling between October and January, when application volumes peak. Once submitted, track your application status through the portal and confirm it reads 'GRANTED' before you fly.
Entry Points Allowed for India e-Visa vs VoA
This is where the two options differ most practically.
The e-Visa is accepted at over 30 designated airports and seaports across India — including all major international gateways. Check the full authorized entry and exit ports list before booking.
The VoA, by contrast, is only available at 6 airports — Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad. If your flight arrives at any other airport, VoA is not an option — and finding out at the immigration counter is not a situation worth putting yourself in.
Most direct or connecting flights from Seoul Incheon to India land at e-Visa enabled airports, but confirm your specific routing before booking.
When South Koreans Visit India — and What They Come For?
The most popular travel window from Korea to India is October to March — when temperatures across North India are comfortable, the monsoon has passed, and visibility at major sites like the Taj Mahal is at its best. If you're travelling during the peak October–January window, apply well in advance.
South Korean travelers tend to be drawn to a few distinct circuits. The Golden Triangle — Delhi, Agra, Jaipur — remains the classic starting point. Rajasthan's palace cities — Jodhpur, Udaipur, Jaisalmer — attract those looking for something beyond the well-worn route. Kerala's backwaters and Ayurvedic wellness retreats appeal to travelers after a slower pace. Rishikesh draws yoga and meditation practitioners. And the Buddhist circuit — Bodh Gaya, Sarnath, Varanasi — holds particular cultural significance for South Korean travelers, given the deep roots of Buddhism in Korean history and daily life.
Whatever the destination, give your e-Visa application the time it deserves — 2 to 3 weeks minimum before departure.
Other Critical Guidelines
India Visa Extension: India e-Visas cannot be extended once issued. If you need to stay longer, you must exit India before your visa expires and reapply from outside the country. In genuine emergencies, the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) — present in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Amritsar — may be approached, but approval is at the authority's discretion and not guaranteed.
India Visa Conversion: An e-Visa cannot be converted into any other visa category (employment, student, research) while inside India. If your purpose of travel changes, you must exit and apply for the appropriate visa through the Embassy of India in Seoul.
Long-term purposes: For employment, full-time study, or research, a regular sticker visa is required. This must be applied for through the Indian Mission before travel.
US citizens should visit Embassy of India in Washington while Canadian nationals should consult from High Commission of India in Ottawa for applying for a Regular Indian visa. Same goes for the Italian passport holders - visiting Diplomatic missions of India in Italy is a must option for a regular Indian visa.
Restricted areas: Parts of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh require a Protected Area Permit (PAP) in addition to your e-Visa. Apply for this separately in advance if your itinerary includes these regions.
Same passport rule: You must travel on the exact passport used to apply. If your passport has been renewed since applying, carry both old and new passports to avoid any issue at Indian immigration.
Pakistani lineage: South Korean nationals whose parents or grandparents were born in or were permanent residents of Pakistan are not eligible for an e-Visa or VoA. A regular visa applied through the Indian Mission is required.
