Citizens of Sweden who are planning their trip to India this year, might have heard of ancient temple towns, Himalayan valleys, backwater canals, spice markets. India is a world that welcomes people around the globe with a big heart.
Before experiencing any of it, there's an India visa to sort. Here's exactly how!

Swedish Passport, Traveling from India? India Visa Required
Swedish nationals need a visa to enter India. There's no visa on arrival and no visa-free access — your India visa must be confirmed before you board.
The good news: the India e-Visa handles it entirely online. No visit to the Embassy of India in Stockholm, no documents to post, no queue. You apply, pay, and receive your Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) by email.
Before you begin, two things worth knowing:
- OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) cardholders holding a Swedish passport don't need an India visa — the OCI card exempts you regardless of which passport you carry.
- Diplomatic, official, service, and special passport holders are not eligible for an India e-Visa and must apply directly through the Indian Embassy in Stockholm.
Confirm your eligibility before starting — citizens of Brazil, Australia, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia are among 175 nationalities that are eligible for an India e-Visa.
Five India e-Visa Types — Pick the One That Matches Your Trip
Choosing the wrong India e-Visa category is among the most common and costly application mistakes. The portal won't catch a category mismatch — a reviewer will, after your fee is already gone. Match your category to your actual purpose of travel:
- India e-Tourist Visa — Holidays, sightseeing, yoga retreats, short courses in language, cooking, or music, or visiting friends and family. Available in 30 days (double entry), 1 year (multiple entry), or 5 years (multiple entry). The 1-year and 5-year options allow a maximum of 180 cumulative days in India per calendar year. If you're planning to spend long stretches in India across multiple trips, the 5-year India e-Tourist Visa is worth considering.
- India e-Business Visa — Business meetings, trade visits, or any commercial activity. Valid for 1 year with multiple entries, each stay capped at 180 days. If your Sweden-based company has India operations or partnerships, this is the route — not the tourist visa. Full details on the India e-Business Visa.
- India e-Medical Visa — Treatment at a recognized Indian hospital. Valid for 60 days with triple entry. Requires a letter from the treating facility in India on official letterhead. See the India e-Medical Visa for the full document list.
- India e-Medical Attendant Visa — For those accompanying an e-Medical Visa holder. Up to two attendants allowed per patient. Validity mirrors the patient's visa — 60 days, triple entry.
- India e-Conference Visa — For attending conferences, seminars, or workshops organized by Indian government bodies or recognized institutions. Requires a formal invitation and, in most cases, political clearance from India's Ministry of External Affairs.
What Swedish Citizens Need to Apply for an India e-Visa
Prepare all of this before opening the application form — stopping mid-way to locate a document is where errors happen:
✔️ Valid Swedish passport (ordinary) — minimum 6 months validity beyond your India arrival date, with at least 2 blank pages. If issued within the last 6 months, carry your previous passport too.
✔️ Scanned passport bio page — clear, color PDF, 10 KB–300 KB. Every detail must be legible to a human reviewer — blurry scans pass the upload check and fail manual review.
✔️ Recent passport photograph — JPEG, 10 KB–1 MB, plain white background, no glasses, taken within the last 6 months. File name in plain alphabets only — no spaces, numbers, or special characters.
✔️ Valid email address — your approved India e-Visa ETA is delivered here. Double-check before submitting.
✔️ Supporting documents if applicable — business card and invitation letter for India e-Business visa, hospital letter on letterhead for India e-Medical visa, event invitation for India e-Conference visa. All documents must be in English — non-English documents are rejected regardless of content.
✔️ Payment Method— credit or debit card. A bank transaction charge of 3% applies additionally on the India e-Visa fee.
Applying Through IVC Visas? Five Steps It Is...
IVC Visas is a step ahead when it comes to India e-Visa application as it explains through a perfect guide.
Step 1 — Choose your application option
Option A: IVC Visas completes and submits the full India e-Visa application on your behalf.
Option B: You fill in the form and our team reviews it before submission. Both options include a photo and document compliance check before anything reaches the government portal — because an India e-Visa fee once paid is non-refundable, and a pre-submission review is your strongest protection against losing it.
Step 2 — Complete your application form
Enter your nationality, India e-Visa category, travel dates, and passport details. Every name, number, and date must match your passport exactly — a single character off is enough for a rejection.
Step 3 — Upload your documents
Passport bio page scan and photograph. Business, medical, or conference applicants upload the relevant supporting document. English documents only, plain alphabet file names only.
Step 4 — Pay the India e-Visa fee
Fees vary by visa type and duration. Check the current India e-Visa fee for Swedish nationals before applying. All fees are non-refundable once submitted.
Step 5 — Receive your ETA and prepare to travel
Your approved India e-Visa ETA arrives by email as a PDF. Print a physical copy — don't rely on digital only. Confirm your status reads 'GRANTED' on the official portal of Indian Visa Website before flying. You can also track your India visa application through IVC Visas.
Apply at least 2–3 weeks before your travel date — real-world India e-Visa processing averages 8–10 business days. The official minimum is 4 days, which is the floor, not the target.
Before You Fly — What Every Swedish Applicant Must Know
Entering India — airports, seaports, and land borders:
Your India e-Visa permits entry through 33 designated airports, 33 designated seaports, or 4 designated land ports. First entry at these land ports is permitted; any other crossing is not. Exit may be through any authorized Immigration Check Post. Confirm your entry point against the authorized India entry and exit ports list before confirming travel bookings.
A granted India visa doesn't guarantee entry:
Your approved India e-Visa authorizes travel — it doesn't guarantee entry. Immigration officers at the arrival port retain full discretion. Carry your printed ETA, a confirmed return or onward ticket, and ensure your declared purpose matches your India visa category.
Stay within your India visa's declared purpose:
Business activity on an India e-Tourist Visa, or tourism on an India e-Business Visa, violates visa conditions and can result in denial of entry or deportation from India.
Complete the e-Arrival Card before boarding — not at the airport:
As of April 2026, all travelers entering India must complete the digital e-Arrival Card within 72 hours before arrival — via the official portal or the Indian Visa Su-Swagatam app. On arrival, biometrics will be captured and your passport stamped. Verify the immigration stamp is affixed before leaving the counter — if missed, contact the nearest FRRO immediately.
Extending your India e-Visa stay:
India e-Visas are non-extendable and non-convertible. If unable to depart within your India visa's validity for a genuine reason, apply for an extension at e-FRRO portal before expiry. Overstaying without approval is an illegal act under Indian immigration law. For long-term purposes — employment, study, research — exit India and apply for the appropriate India visa type through the Embassy of India in Stockholm.
Nordic neighbors of Sweden - Norway, Denmark, and Finland follow the same India e-Visa guideline, visiting the Indian Mission in their country for applying for long-term purposes.
Other restrictions applicable to all India e-Visa holders:
Those with a defense, military, security, or police background are not eligible for an India e-Visa — apply through the Indian Mission. All foreign nationals are prohibited from religious preaching, distributing religious material, or any conversion-related activity, regardless of India visa type. If you have visited a Yellow Fever endemic country within 6 days of arriving in India, carry a valid vaccination certificate. Parts of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh require a Protected Area Permit (PAP) in addition to your India e-Visa — apply for this separately and in advance.
Pakistani lineage:
Swedish nationals whose parents or grandparents were born in or were permanent residents of Pakistan are not eligible for an India e-Visa. A regular India visa applied through the Embassy of India in Stockholm is required.
Same passport rule:
Travel on the exact passport used to apply for your India visa. If renewed since applying, carry both old and new passports to Indian immigration.
