Switzerland runs on precision. Trains arrive on time, clocks are engineered to the second, and everything is exactly where you expect it. India operates on an entirely different logic — and for many Swiss travelers, that's exactly the point. Colour, scale, chaos and stillness in the same street. The contrast is the draw.
Before any of it, there's one practical step: the Indian visa. Swiss passport holders require one; it's applied for entirely online, and getting it right before you fly is what this guide is for.

Are Swiss Citizens Eligible for India E-Visa?
An Indian visa is required for all Swiss passport holders travelling to India. There is no visa on arrival and no visa-free access for Swiss nationals. Your visa must be approved and received before you travel.
The route: India e-Visa, applied online, paid online, delivered to your email as an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). No visit to the Embassy of India in Berne, no physical documents to post, no queue.
Two important distinctions before you apply:
- OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) cardholders holding a Swiss passport are exempt from the visa requirement and do not need to apply.
- Diplomatic and official passport holders are not eligible for an e-Visa. They must apply directly through the Embassy of India in Berne, which also has jurisdiction over Liechtenstein.
Whether you have a passport from Sweden, Malaysia, New Zealand or Saudi Arabia, confirm your eligibility for an India e-visa before starting.
India e-Visa Categories for Swiss Nationals
Choosing the right category matters! Applying under the wrong one is one of the most common mistakes that leads to rejection, and the fee is non-refundable either way.

e-Tourist Visa is suitable for holidays, sightseeing, yoga retreats, visiting friends or family, or short recreational courses. Available in three durations — 30 days (double entry), 1 year (multiple entry), and 5 years (multiple entry). The 1-year and 5-year options cap total stay at 180 days within any single calendar year.
e-Business Visa is suitable for business meetings, trade visits, or commercial activity. Valid for 1 year with multiple entries, each stay not exceeding 180 days. If any part of your trip involves business, this is the correct category — not the e-Tourist Visa.
e-Medical Visa is for Swiss nationals travelling to India for treatment at a recognized Indian hospital. Valid for 60 days with triple entry. A letter from the treating hospital in India is required.
e-Medical Attendant Visa is for companions travelling alongside an e-Medical Visa holder. Up to two attendants are permitted per patient. Validity mirrors the patient's visa — 60 days, triple entry.
e-Conference Visa sits right for conferences, seminars, or workshops organized by Indian government bodies or recognized institutions. Requires a formal invitation letter and, in most cases, political clearance from India's Ministry of External Affairs.
Documents and other Requirements for Switzerland Passport Holders
Prepare everything before starting — the application takes 10–15 minutes, and stopping mid-way to locate documents is where mistakes happen.
✔️ Valid Swiss passport (ordinary) — minimum 6 months validity from your intended India arrival date, with at least 2 blank pages. If your passport was issued within the last 6 months, carry your previous passport too.
✔️ Scanned passport bio page — clear colour PDF, 10 KB–300 KB, showing name, date of birth, nationality, and expiry date. Blurry scans pass the upload check and fail manual review — make sure it's legible.
✔️ Recent passport photograph — JPEG, 10 KB–1 MB, plain white background, no glasses, taken within the last 6 months. File name in plain alphabets only — no numbers, spaces, or special characters.
✔️ Valid email address — your ETA is delivered here. A typo in your email means your visa goes nowhere.
✔️ Payment Method— credit or debit. A 3% bank transaction charge applies additionally.
✔️ Category-specific documents — business card and invitation letter (e-Business), hospital letter on letterhead (e-Medical), event invitation with clearances (e-Conference). All supporting documents must be in English — non-English documents are liable for rejection.
How to Apply Through IVC Visas?
Step 1 — Choose your option
Option A: IVC Visas completes and submits the full application on your behalf.
Option B: You fill in the form, and our team reviews it before submission. Both options include a photo and document compliance check before anything reaches the government portal.
Step 2 — Fill in your application
Complete the form with your nationality, visa category, travel dates, and passport details. Every name, date, and number must match your passport character for character — a mismatch is grounds for rejection.
Step 3 — Upload your documents
Passport bio page scan and photograph. For business, medical, or conference applications, upload the relevant supporting document. English only, plain alphabet file names only.
Step 4 — Pay the visa fee
Fees vary by visa type and duration. Check the current India e-Visa fee for Swiss nationals before applying. A 3% transaction charge applies additionally. All fees are non-refundable once submitted — a pre-submission review is your best protection against paying twice.
Step 5 — Receive your ETA and travel
Your approved ETA arrives by email as a PDF. Print a physical copy and carry it to India. Confirm your status reads 'GRANTED' on the official portal of the Indian Visa website before you fly — never travel on a pending status.
Track your application anytime through IVC Visas.
The official processing window is 72 hours. Real-world processing currently averages 8–10 business days. Apply at least 2–3 weeks before your travel date. The 30-day e-Tourist Visa accepts applications up to 30 days in advance; all other categories allow up to 120 days.
Critical Guidelines worth Knowing
✔️ Entry points — airports, seaports, and land borders
Entry is permitted through 33 designated airports, 33 designated seaports, or 4 designated land ports. Entry through any other crossing is not permitted on an India e-Visa. Exit may be through any authorised Immigration Check Post.
Check the authorised entry and exit ports before finalising your itinerary.
✔️ A visa grant does not guarantee entry
An approved ETA authorises travel to India — it does not guarantee entry. Immigration officers retain full discretion at the port of arrival. Carry your printed ETA, ensure your purpose of travel matches your visa category, and have proof of return or onward travel available.
✔️ Adhere strictly to your visa purpose
Activities must match the declared purpose of your visa. Business activity on an e-Tourist Visa violates visa conditions and can result in denial of entry or deportation.
✔️ Immigration tip — e-Arrival Card, biometrics, and passport stamp
Complete the digital e-Arrival Card within 72 hours before arrival, via the official portal or the Indian Visa Su-Swagatam app — before you board, not at the airport. On arrival, your biometrics will be captured and your passport stamped. Ensure the immigration stamp is affixed — if missed, contact the nearest FRRO immediately.
✔️ Extension and conversion of the India e-visa
India e-Visas are non-extendable and non-convertible. If you are genuinely unable to depart within your visa's validity, apply for an extension online at the e-FRRO portal before expiry. Remaining beyond expiry without approval is an illegal overstay. For long-term purposes — employment, study, research — exit India and apply for the appropriate visa through the Embassy of India in Berne.
✔️ Pakistani Origin
Swiss nationals of Pakistani origin, or those whose parents or grandparents were born in or were permanent residents of Pakistan, are not eligible for an India e-Visa. A regular visa application through the Indian Mission is required.
Fellow European travelers from Germany, France, Italy, Netherlands, and Spain follow the same guidelines — each with their own passport, each needing visits to the Indian Missions in their respective countries.
✔️ Other restrictions
Defence, military, security, or police background holders are not eligible for an India e-Visa — apply through the Indian Mission. Religious activity of any kind — preaching, distributing material, or conversion-related activity — is prohibited on all visa types.
If you have visited a Yellow Fever endemic country within 6 days of your India arrival, carry a valid vaccination certificate.
Parts of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh require a Protected Area Permit (PAP) in addition to your e-Visa.

From the Alps to the Himalayas — IVC Visas Get You There
Switzerland has mountains. So does India — except the Himalayas are a different scale entirely. Swiss travellers are often drawn to India's northern hill stations, the trekking routes of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, and places like Kashmir's Gulmarg — sometimes called India's own alpine valley. Others come for Rajasthan's palaces, Kerala's backwaters, the temples of Varanasi, or the focused quiet of a Rishikesh morning. October to March is the ideal window for most of these circuits.
Whatever brings you, the India e-Visa is the one step between your Swiss passport and all of it.
At IVC Visas, we handle India e-Visa applications for Swiss nationals and travelers from over 175 countries — reviewing every application before submission and supporting you through to arrival.
