Your India e-Visa Roadmap: A Guide for Kenyan Citizens

The India-Kenya connection runs along the Indian Ocean coast and goes back centuries before either country had a name for the relationship. Indian traders worked the Swahili coast long before colonial rule, and from 1895 onward, thousands of Indian laborers helped build the Mombasa-Nairobi railway that still shapes Kenya's infrastructure today. That history left behind a substantial Indian diaspora in Kenya; large enough that the community is formally recognized as the country's 44th tribe.

That long-running connection doesn't shortcut the paperwork, though. If you're a Kenyan citizen planning a trip to India, you'll need an India e-Visa before you fly. Here's the complete roadmap.

Step 1: Confirm You're Eligible

Kenya is on India's eligible-nationality list for the e-Visa scheme. There's no visa-on-arrival for Kenyan passport holders, so your India e-Visa has to be applied for and approved online before travel.

A couple of exceptions worth flagging:

  1. OCI cardholders (Overseas Citizens of India) don't need a visa at all, regardless of current nationality.
  2. Diplomatic and official passport holders can't use the e-Visa system and need to apply through the High Commission of India in Nairobi directly.

Everyone else with an ordinary Kenyan passport applies through the India e-Visa portal.

Step 2: Pick the Right Category

Most Kenyan applicants choose one of three categories, though you may avail more visa options like

India e-Tourist Visa: For sightseeing, family visits, and short wellness or yoga programs. Available in 30 days (double entry), 1 year, and 5 years (both multiple entry). This is what most Kenyan travelers apply for.

India e-Business Visa: For trade visits, meetings, and commercial exploration. Valid one year from the date your ETA is granted, with multiple entries allowed. Given how much Kenyan trade and diaspora-linked business already runs through India, this category sees regular use from Kenyan applicants.

India e-Medical Visa: For treatment at a recognized Indian hospital. Valid 60 days from first arrival, triple entry, and requires a letter from the treating hospital. A companion can apply for an e-Medical Attendant Visa under the same terms, with up to two attendants permitted.

⚠️ Important: None of these categories convert into one another once granted. Pick carefully before you apply.

Choosing the right category from the start of the Indian e-visa application helps eligible applicants from Ireland, Taiwan, New Zealand and other nations, avoid the biggest mistake. This prevents rejection or delays in the application.

Step 3: Gather Your Documents

➡️ For the e-Tourist Visa, you'll need:

  1. A valid Kenyan passport with at least 6 months' remaining validity and 2 blank pages
  2. A recent passport-style photo on a plain white background
  3. A clear scan of your passport's bio page
  4. A working email address, since your approved ETA is sent there

No itinerary, accommodation proof, or invitation letter is required for tourism, though immigration officers on arrival may ask for a return ticket and proof of funds.

➡️ For the e-Business Visa, add an invitation letter from the company you're visiting in India.

➡️ For the e-Medical Visa, add a hospital letter confirming your appointment, written in English.

If you ever feel stressed during this step of the application, IVC guides you which documents you require as per your chosen India visa category.

Step 4: Know What It Costs

Here's the breakdown by category:

A bank transaction charge applies on top of every category at checkout, currently 3% for card payments and 4% for PayPal, per the official government portal. Fees are revised periodically, so confirm before paying.

Step 5: Apply Online, and Review with IVC

Either you get to start the application with IVC from the beginning or you can fill the official India visa form, online at the website and get it reviewed by IVC before submitting.

Here's how the process actually runs:

  1. Select your details: Nationality(Kenya), visa category, and expected arrival date in India.
  2. Fill in the form: passport, contact and personal details exactly as they appear on your passport.
  3. Upload documents and pay: Your bio-page scan, photo, and the applicable fee plus bank charge.
  4. Application review: Your details and documents are checked against the category's requirements before submission, catching mismatched names or non-compliant photos early.
  5. Track your application: You'll get an application ID to follow progress through the government portal or directly with us.
  6. Receive your ETA: Once your status reads GRANTED, your visa arrives by email as a PDF. Print it; immigration wants a physical copy alongside your passport.

IVC also provides express(rush) services to process application on urgent demand. If you want your application to process faster, choose the right service, so that you don't miss your travel date.

Apply at least 2–3 weeks before travel. The government's stated minimum is 4 days before arrival, but treat that as a floor, not a plan, especially during peak season between October and March.

Step 6: Know the Rules That Actually Matter

A short note before the list: most of these conditions exist to control where and how foreigners enter India, and to keep each visa category tied to its intended purpose. They apply to every nationality, not just Kenyan travelers, but they're worth knowing before you fly.

1️⃣ Your India e-Visa permits entry through designated airports, seaports, or land ports. No other crossing is permitted. Currently, there are 33 designated airports, seaports and 4 land borders. You may exit from any port.

Recommendation: Check the authorized ports list before booking as the official list updates eventually.

2️⃣ Since April 2026, the digital e-Arrival Card is mandatory for all foreign nationals. You must complete it within 72 hours before arrival via the official portal or Indian Visa Su-Swagatam app, before you board.

Recommendation: As a Kenyan passport holder, you must complete e-Arrival Card before the given timeline.

3️⃣ An approved ETA authorizes travel but does not guarantee entry if you don't carry other documents with you. Immigration officers at India e-visa counter ask for your boarding ticket, proof of accommodation and sufficient funds.

Recommendation: Carry your printed ETA, a confirmed return ticket, accommodation details, and proof of sufficient funds.

4️⃣ India e-Visas are non-extendable and non-conversion. If unable to depart within validity, apply at FRRO before expiry. Overstaying is an illegal act under Indian immigration law, and so is doing business activities on an e-tourist visa.

Recommendation: Always stay within your visa validity. Apply with FRRO only in emergency cases. Your activities' purpose should match your visa type.

5️⃣ Kenyan nationals with Pakistani lineage through a parent or grandparent are not eligible for an India e-Visa. They require a regular visa to enter India.

Recommendation: Apply for a regular/sticker visa through the Indian Mission in Nairobi.

6️⃣ Defence and military background holders are similarly ineligible for an Indian e-visa.

Recommendation: Apply for a regular/sticker visa through the Indian Mission in Nairobi.

7️⃣ Other guidelines:

  1. Religious preaching or conversion-related activity is prohibited on all visa types.
  2. If you have transited through a Yellow Fever endemic country within 6 days of arrival, carry a valid vaccination certificate.
  3. Parts of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh require a Protected Area Permit in addition to your India e-Visa.
  4. Travel on the same passport used to apply.

India for Kenyan Travelers: What to Expect on the Ground

For Kenyan travelers — particularly those with family ties to India's diaspora community — a trip to India often carries a dimension beyond ordinary tourism. For others visiting purely as travelers, India is one of the most geographically and culturally diverse destinations on the planet, and one where a little practical knowledge makes an outsized difference.

The Diaspora Connection in Practice

Kenya's Indian-origin community is concentrated in Nairobi and Mombasa, with family roots in Gujarat, Punjab, and Sindh. For Kenyan travelers visiting ancestral towns or family connections in these Indian states:

  1. Gujarat (Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot, Bhavnagar) is accessible via direct domestic flight from Mumbai. Ahmedabad is also India's first UNESCO World Heritage City and worth visiting independently of family connections.
  2. Punjab (Amritsar, Ludhiana, Chandigarh) is accessible via Delhi. The Golden Temple in Amritsar is one of India's most genuinely moving experiences regardless of religious background — entry is free and open to all.
  3. Sindhi heritage in Ulhasnagar (near Mumbai) and parts of Delhi.

Beyond diaspora-specific travel, Kenyan tourists visiting India tend to focus on:

  1. The Golden Triangle (Delhi–Agra–Jaipur) for a concentrated first-visit circuit
  2. Kerala for its coastal and backwater landscapes, which share some ecological parallels with East Africa's Indian Ocean coast
  3. Wildlife tourism — India's national parks (Ranthambore, Bandhavgarh, Jim Corbett) offer big-cat sightings that Kenyan travelers with a safari background will find a different but compelling counterpart to East African reserves

Practical Ground-Level Details

  1. Currency: Indian Rupee at approximately 1.2–1.4 INR per Kenyan Shilling in early 2026. ATMs widely available in cities; carry small-denomination cash (₹100–₹500 notes) for markets and local transport.
  2. Climate: October to March is the optimal window. Kenya's own November–April long/short rains season means this India travel window aligns conveniently with Kenyan dry season travel patterns.
  3. Getting around: Indian Railways and domestic aviation are the practical combination for covering India's distances. Book trains via IRCTC tourist quota 6–8 weeks ahead for peak-season routes.
  4. Health: Travel insurance covering medical care is strongly recommended. Private hospitals in Indian cities are of high quality, but costs for uninsured foreign nationals can be significant. Confirm your policy covers the full duration of your India trip before departure.
  5. SIM cards: Available at major airports on arrival (Airtel, Jio) with a passport copy. Pick one up before exiting the terminal.

Why Kenyan Travelers Choose IVC Visas?

A long history between two countries doesn't make a visa application self-explanatory. Document requirements, photo specifications, and the right category selection still matter, and a small mismatch can still mean delays in India e-visa application.

Kenyan citizens aren't applying through a separate process. Nationals of South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda go through the identical India e-Visa structure, with their own fee schedules but the same categories and review steps.

At IVC Visas, every application is reviewed before it reaches the government portal, checking your documents, your photo, and your category against what you're actually traveling for.
